Looking for pictures of what the original jerry cans mounted to the sides of the FJ40 looked like. I have the 4 original bolts on each rear quarter panel to mount a jerry can...but wondering what the original bracket would have looked like to hold the cans?

Were those stock factory options?

the OEM jerry can holders had the same bolt-up pattern as the tire carriers, and usually placed there. on FJ25's, I've seen them on the side quarter panel(again where the FJ25 spare tire mount would go), and on the front cowl area. the mount on the front cowl area required recessing the bottom of the fender.

Weird. So the cans were mounted on the front quarter panel rather than the rear QP on the early FJs? My FJ has the 4 Jerry Can mounting bolts on both sides of the rear quarter panels. Kind of hard to see since they are body color. I plan on mounting my jerrys on the sides. Just trying to figure out if I can find a set of mounts.

The red Blitz can holder's mount holes line up perfectly with the holes on the rear quarter of my '74, I just haven't gotten around to mounting it up yet.

If you off road I would avoid putting them on the side unless they are by the fenders like in the old pictures, but placed there will block the kick vent. Mounting stuff hanging off the side in the rear is a bad idea even if you do mild off roading.

The blitz can mounts on the side of the rear fender is totally different from what this thread was originally discussing...

I started the thread just so I could see some pictures of how the Jerry cans were originally suppose to be mounted on the back rear fenders. Thats what this thread was about. I got some pics of the actual original brackets...but no pics of them mounted on the rear fenders....just the earlier models mounted on the fronts.

I would still like to see some possible factory pictures or vintage pics of the factory rear mounted jerry cans.

I agree that it would be terrible to have them mounted on the rear if you are off-roading...but if doing work around a farm or open field, they are nice.

I do not think any fj40s sold in the US came with gas can mounts, Back in the 70s My Dad wanted to surprise me, I was out of town and he mounted two Blitz gas cans on the side of my 71 FJ40 this lasted exactly only one off road trip  ripped right through the sheet metal even though large fender washers were used.
I quickly removed them, so be sure to use a backing plate 3/16" or more a lot of weight out there the mounting to the spare tire carrier mount makes more sense but what do you do with the spare?
