Best wishes for a good trip Southbound!

Sounds like you're ready and have things well thought out.

Be safe and let us know how you're doing during the trip!

If you come across any pirates on your way south, you could use your back hatch for a panic room. Dont forget to load a couple PowerBars and a roll of TP back there for just such an occasion.

Truck looks good, hope you do well on your trip.

Also regarding the GPS, I did some prelim research a couple of years ago and could not find any gps maps of central america. I was thinking of dowloading satellite photos and overlaying lattitude/longitude grids in my 'puter. Never got any further than concept. Do you have gps compatible maps?

Also, are you going by way of baja or mainland? If baja, I'm right on the way here in San Diego. Feel free to pitstop for resupply.

I am very interested in learning aboub your GPS/satelite communications system. would you please give us the name of it, the model and where to find more info about buyng one?

The model of the unit is the Stellar ST2500 (http://www.stellar-sat.com/html/products/st2500.html) and the service provider is Time Critical Systems, Inc. They have been extremely helpful and I'm very happy with the product so far. The only similar global tracking systems I found were out of Australia and cost several times as much. Check it out:

I haven't found any good GPS maps of Central America but I don't intend on using GPS much for navigation. My main use for it will be for tracking the vehicle for security purposes and for finding my truck again after day hikes and such.

I don't think I'll make it that far west but thanks for the offer!

Southbound just passed through Tamarindo, Costa Rica.
Barely caught up with each other over lunch, and he is off to points south.

Nice looking truck, nice guy.

You GO Southbound!!!!

:bounce:  It's a great drive down to Pavones and then into Panama! I wish it were me! Hope to hear more on his travels and how the 60's holding up. You got any info on that Sandcruiser?

Pura Vida.

the truck looked very good. a little saggy in the butt, but that's pretty darn normal for a rig that has done a few thousand miles fully loaded in latin america!

One big point on which we both agreed: stock Toyota parts outlast just about any aftermarket gizmos. Put another way: most breakdowns are the result of things that the Toyota engineers *didn't* design.

Also, an electric winch, while a nice luxury, is far less a "must have" than a rooftop tent. they both cost about 1,000 bucks, but you use the tent just about every day and the winch might only get used 2 (southbound) or 3 (sandcruiser) times in the whole journey.
