Nice pics. Did you use a Herculiner Brush-on Bedliner Kit? How much did you use?

For the purposes of this thread, de-flaring a cruiser, Herc is one option.

Yeah, I used the box kit and a few extras. The kit comes with a gallon of Herc, roller handle, two roller brushes (but they're a porous plastic material not a furry roller) scuff pad, a hand brush for nooks and crannies, and instructions. The kit runs around $75, give or take. I think I ended up using just over a gallon to do the whole vehicle, roof and body. Getting the UV Topcoat is a must or it will look terrible with no shine at all very soon.

1 kit would do the whole vehicle if you didn't apply it as thickly as I did. I was using 3 coats I think. You can buy a quart to top it off if needed. I bought two kits to have more rollers but wouldn't have needed to if I'd done the whole body at one time. You could probably clean the roller with xylene too. I did the roof and body several months apart. I bought a long drill bit device to stir up the gallon really well. In hindsight, if you wanted less texture, you could stir less. I used one of those free lid attachments to pour it into the pan. Bought a cheap paint pan at Ace. Some xylene proof gloves. Anyway, you can do the whole vehicle for about $100. Not more than $125, I think. Heck, say $150 total for tape, paper, etc... just to be safe.

For the purposes of this thread, a kit will easily cover where the flares were but I love going through bushes or whatever and not having to think about it. A couple of days ago at Costco a guy's shopping cart was rolling toward the LC. He kinda jumped and ran to get it. I just smiled and said "It's not gonna hurt my vehicle". He looked at the body and said "No, guess not". Door dings are moot now.

It's worth it to go to the Herculiner website and check it out. Lots of info there. Read through the .pdf's to get a good idea of the process because I might have left something out. The instructions are great. I just tried to upload the file but it's over the limit. There are some youtube videos out there too. The biggest thing is just have all the stuff ready and then be ready to wait to dry between coats.

Like what you did Black Rhino.

Great 4Runner thread.;)

I think the genesis of this is flare removal idea is the guys... like myself who have/had factory running boards. They either get beat up, torn off on the trail or replaced with sliders. Once the running boards are gone the flares look unfinished and can be ripped off on the trail. My running boards are long gone and my flares are beat with door dings and brush scratches. Time for my flares to go.

When I first got my LC I was firmly in the "keep the flares" camp. But, as I looked at other rigs, and rode on the trail, I decided that: 1) I liked the flare-less look (kind of an homage to the 60 Series); 2) In my mind, it wasn't a matter of "if" but simply "when" I lost one off-road. So, I took them off and actually sold them to a fellow Mudder.

The photos are before, right after, temporary fix (nylon hole plugs with touch-up paint), final solution (Line-X)

@rjinga She looks almost like a different rig now! I'm debating on deflaring the LX and just painting the whole truck in Lexus Opal White Metallic. BTW how's the HG work going?

I made the parts deposit on Tuesday; smittycrusher went by there on Wednesday and told me that they already had the head removed. The X-factor is the machine shop's turnaround time.

Conscious decision, or trail damage?

Literally pulled mine like an hour ago, as well as the front bumper. Stock height on 37/12.50/17's. BFG KM2's and Black Rock 17x8 Steel Wheels. I have plans to do the body work soon, debating on line-x or paint. Still a toss up! Enjoy.
