This is also posted in expedition builds.

These pictures show an LRA 24 gallon aux tank installed on a 1992 80 series.

When shopping, I had a difficult time locating pictures of the position of installed 80 series LRA tanks (this is the smaller of two available) as may impact ground clearance and departure angle. I hope these pictures help others doing similar research.

The tank is located in the spare wheel bay. The spare must be removed and relocated. The tank rides nice and high, out of the way:

A pump delivers fuel from aux to the main tank. A dash switch turns the pump on and off and shows the aux tank fuel level.

The tanks are fueled from a common point. When fueling, a pull switch controls which tank fuel is sent to. The out position, shown below, sends fuel to the aux tank; depressing it sends to the main tank.

The tank was purchased from Cruiser Brothers. Local mechanics who know my 80 installed it. They said installation was straight forward and that everything that was needed was included.

The tank:
  • approximately doubles the vehicle range;
  • gets auxiliary fuel off the roof rack (sketchy for a number of reasons);
  • lowers the truck's center of gravity;
  • allows me to isolate one tank from the other, keeping one tank of good fuel as a measure of security for bad fuel that can be encountered while touring Mexico, as I often do;
  • allows one to stockpile cheap fuel and pass by expensive rural fuel when traveling, saving money.
Cheers,
T

Georg Esterer @orangefj45 and I (the Cruiser Brothers) appreciate the opportunity to be of service. We have inbound shipments once or twice a month - trying to keep stock on the shelf!

Ward,

I've started building a 60 body on an 80 chassis and was going to build a custom tank (after the CA-REF signs off) but may be interested going this route. I need frame to tank reference pics to see if it will fit after the frame chop. I think this will be a tank that many 60 mod owners in the near future as the 80 frame swap becomes more popular will want to know about.

You can email them if you'd like ( jason@trail-tailor.com )

Back to you soonest,

Don't know if it fits on regular 4x4 Labs rear bumper. The Labs bumper crossmember that ties to the 2" receiver square tubing, is to far back and would interfere with the tank. But if you don't have your rear labs bumper yet or haven't welded a bumper kit you can move that crossmember back (make the receiver hitch shorter) then you will make enough space to mount the fuel tank. Fuel tank comes with a crossmember that you will have too shorten by 1/4" or more to fit between the Labs rails. Better yet ditch the LRA crossmember and use the Labs crossmember to mount the the 2 bolts that support the back of the fuel tank.
I do have a LRA 24 tank and Labs bumper.

Not seeing this on the cruiser brother website. How much does this set up run?
We are still dicking around with website remodel - also getting new ad content ready for print and online use as below.

There are two lines of tank available for the 80s....37gallon replacement main tanks at $1,495 and the aux tanks with 42 or 24 gallons at $1,595. There are different main tanks for diesel and petrol, but the aux tanks suit both fuels.

Lots of other Toyota, Jeep, Land Rover and other marques. See attached catalogue and FAQ document.

And then there is the video...

Some other photos of the 24 tank and components.

The kit is complete and contains everything you will need, including a new twin-fill fuel filler with two ports to direct nozzle/flow into the main or aux tanks. The old OEM style valve with flapper/diversion valve is not included.

Looks nice. Need to start saving some pesos.

Did I read right that there is a 42 gal version of the AUX tank? How much further does that hang down?
Yes, we have 40 gallon aux tanks for 80 Series. They do not hang down all that much. WIll dig out a photo tomorrow.

BAM... 42 gallon aux

My 24 LRA aux. tank was bought way back in 2009. from Man-A-Free, old dealer in the USA. Nothing free about it. It was like $1400+ with shipping to Miami, plus the freight forwarder to Venezuela LoL. But other than my Engel 45 fridge and dual battery setup. its the single most important mod that I have done. Crossing the Uyuni Dessert from San Pedro de Atacama too Uyuni City was almost 700 km. No refueling :grinpimp::steer: Mind you, that crossing I went up the mountain through "Las Lagunas Coloradas" :flamingo::flamingo::flamingo: elevation on that portion was 5000 mts LoL truck made no power :steer:

My pump and fuel gauge/pump switch still works. Some of the hose clamps that came with my kit had cheap chrome clamps I hope that new kits include all SS hardware.

wow 42 gallons how do you handle that weight? My 24 one affects the handling of the truck and I have OME 864 springs in the back axle. 864 are extra heavy duty springs. I don't have any airbags.

Sounds like an amazing trip. And, indeed - not cheap, but a good value and investment. This is one of two mods I am in the process of making that are pricey, result from a lot of chin scratching, but will also be game changers. The other is a campteq. The LRA aux will open a new realm of remote routes - excited.

campteq? is that a RTT.
