So does the actual PCV valve ever need to be replaced, or are you just good replacing the hose?

The valve should also be replaced. If you have a '98-'02 the valve (12204-50020) will sit inside of a grommet (90480-18001); for '03+ it's just a single unit that screws into the block (12204-50030). If yours uses the grommet be careful while extracting the old one, they love to disentegrate and fall down into the hole. I would recommend using some hemostats

Thanks for that. I'm guessing two of everything are needed for each side.

@2001LC How much oil is tolerable in the vacuum line above the PCV? I’m getting intermittent smoke at start up and noticed that the PCV outlet and both sides of the vacuum line had oil on them. I knocked a fair amount of oil out of my new vacuum line. There was also some oil sitting on the lip of the manifold side pipe. PCV clicks, lines are new, but above issues are present and the PCV fits very loosely in the new grommet from Toyota.

Vacuum line above PCV is PCV hose LH. I never find and measurable oil in either LH or RH hoses.

OEM PCV valve, fit very sung in new OEM grommet!

Picture is worth a thousand words?????????? "Outlet" "vacuum line"

Thanks @2001LC!

Here are the spots where I am noticing oil (orange arrows). I can knock oil out of the vacuum line.

The PCV easily pulls out of the grommet and can wobble back and forth with next to no effort.

I have a 2004. I noticed my engine oil cap smelled like gas.

Can leaky pcv hoses cause gas to enter oil? What can cause gas smell in engine oil? Yes I take short trips, which I read causes rich mixture.

(In another thread I complained about gas smell in cabin - I think this happens only after fill up then smell stops happening. I recently changed spark plugs and you noticed I had bad pcv hoses). I plan to replace pcv and some pcv hoses and also coil rubber plugs
Read a poorly functioning ignition coil can cause this.
