Pardon me while I vent (my hood)

I wouldn't worry about the rain/water too much. My daily driver (Mitsubishi Evo) has a massive hood vent from the factory. It has a louvered "diverter" underneath but it doesn't do a whole lot to stop water intrusion. There are plenty of Evo guys that remove the diverter for more free flowing vent. So its seriously just a massive hole in the hood at that point with a minimal grill to stop small children from falling inside. But they still drive in pouring rain that way without problems. So you'll be fine.

I didn't have a good picture of the vent of my Evo so this is a friends. You can see that he's removed the diverter and you can clearly see the valve cover through the vent. So those small vents you've added will be far less to worry about as far as water is concerned.

Something I observed yesterday driving around in the snain (snow + rain), was that when the flakes landed on the vents, they would melt and evaporate before they dripped anyways, and my cruiser wasn't even up to temp.

Like I said, I think the concerns about water are from people who don't or haven't had vented vehicles. I've never been concerned about water when driving across a river either.:meh:

I have thinking about adding both the intake and exhaust vents from a GTA. Good work on the Z34 vents.

Looking at these Z34 vents on ebay, how do you know which ones are plastic or metal? Specific years?

I knew these were metal because it was in the auction description. When I was looking for them, I don't remember coming across plastic ones. Hope that helps.:cheers:

I also drove an Evo with removed hood louver and never had any issues even with all the rain we have here in the South. I was looking at finding some fender vents from maybe an escalade or land rover like below for the same purpose.

I like the idea of additional vents for cooling, but I was thinking about making them right on the back of hood near front windshield. Having them in the middle still allows the heat to stay back around last cylinder where head gaskets tends to fail. This is the place that very often gets hot when you park a truck. Having vents on the back of the hood should allow heat to escape. Only issue would be that while driving, heat would go out against windshield, heating truck inside.

The fender vents would be considerably tougher IMO on the 80, and not as effective (heat rises). However, you never know unless you try it.;)

Good logic and nice drawing, but I went with Sumotoy's evaluation of the low pressure areas on the 80 hood (mentioned here IH8MUD Forums - View Single Post - ABC'S of 80's Cooling Part IV - Hood Vents, and documented somewhere else). His concerns with smell have not been an issue (my junk don't leak:D, yet), and I went with the Z34 vents as they were the largest, and being metal deal well with heat, which I've already noticed just dumps out of these vents. I don't share the safety concerns that some have voiced. I've had an 80 totaled on a front end collision, and do not think my vents have in anyway compromised the safety of myself or any passengers in the vehicle.

Bump. Thanks for the writeup Nick. I'm about to install some lumina vents. Do you mind posting some closeup pics from the top side? I am trying to figure out how close to the edge of the hood I need to place these without getting too close the the ridge that runs down about 9" from the edge of the hood.
 
I like the idea in theory, but in practice, I am not so sure having hood vents would be a good idea....it did get much deeper than this picture shows. The water was washing up by the winshield before I got out of all of it. The truck kept going, but having hood vents might have spelled disaster for me in this situation.

Just my. $02. My truck has never overheated, nor gotten above 209 or so degrees no matter the situation...

Hey BENO, wouldn't water be inside the engine bay anyway? the force of the water is pushing through the grill and the radiator allowing it into the engine bay. What would have been disastrous about having the vents in that situation? Personally I'd be more worried about NOT having a snorkel. Not a whole lot of water crossing here in CA though.
