I may drive or try to ride with someone, depending on the snow etc. 33's, rear locker, winch, 4"lift, 2 sets of chains... It will depend on who else is driving, how much it snows between now and then, and where we're going.

I leans toward higher "points" for this run regardless. I would even put chains on the required list myself because we are looking at trying to get over the top of the pass. this time of year that is a tough prospect. and as mentioned, the point of this one is to be a hardcore run. mud tires would be high on the list too and definitely 33" min.
Leni, you have a good hard core rig by the pics. any chance you can get a set of chains before the run? it really makes a huge difference. I would give them more points than Steve did. like a 4 per end.
Rudy, with chains, you are right in there with most of the other 80's in the club.

we are looking at this as a 4+ or 5 level snow run (using the Cruise Moab scale).

Agree Shawn, I'd put more emphasis on chains than lockers for a run like this.

I could definitely agree with 4 vs. 3 per end on chains. Another place I was wavering was 1 or 1.5 or 2 points per diameter inch over 33" - and of course the 33" baseline would be variable depending on what others were running as well. Winch vs. Chains would vary depending on terrain and supporting winchpoints too.

I think the real question is-
1. who wants to go considering what's been discussed so far?
2. what is your vehicle and what does it have on it?

most of our runs are for everyone and you don't have to worry about feeling like you are holding up the group...
this one you do have to worry about that. hence the discussion.

I'll start-
FJ40, 6-7" lift, 40" Iroks, lockers front and rear, 1 set of chains, winch, 300hp chevy motor.

I can't pass up the challenge of getting stuck.

FJ40, no winch, +/-6" lift, 35" MT/R, locker F & R, 1 set chains on the way, cold seats, 280lbft 2FE. :grinpimp:

4Runner, M9000, 4" lift, 33" MT/KM, ARB rear, Truetrac front, 1 set chains, warm buns, scrawny little 22RE.

Decission made later which to drive.

Jon, if you have chains for the 40, that is what i'd take. cold sure, but I think it will be way more capable. you can warm up in one of our trucks if you need.

Wish I could make this. Truck is down for the awhile and all extra time is spent wrenching.

Other than a full body swap, what is it that your truck needs? The thing seemed quite capable and made it most of the way home from Rubithon under its own power. :flipoff2:

I have a rear seat heater from a FJ62 sitting around someplace. I really need to figure out a way to mount that thing for additional heat. Maybe attached to the back of the Tuffy console pointing up?

 Good one Mike!

List:

1. New sector shaft/pitman arm/rebuilt PS gear box
2. Swap out Slee 4" mediums in rear to Slee 4" heavies in rear
3. On board air (York)
4. Rebuild drawer system
5. Rebuild front end
6. Rebuild rear end
7. OEM steel wheels
8. new exhaust system
9. Possible re-gear

Damn expensive wheeling trip. You should get Sara to teach you how to drive. She did the same trail and didn't break nearly that much of her junk. :D

As you know, the re-gearing is not a cheap project but it really made a difference in the way my truck drives to and from the trail. The lower gears are a big improvement off-road but the on-road difference is what would convince me to do it all over again if I had to.

Are 37's in your near future?

I think you're alright except maybe for the Chevy motor.

Me: '78 40, 4" lift, 33" BFG MT's, winch, rear locker, F&R chains, F&R heaters.

I'll be bringing the AWD Subaru....

you got chains and a lift on that baby?

Lifted vehicles should get one point - or points for a range:
  • 1" - 3" = 1
  • 3" - 6" = 2
  • 6" - 9" = 3
  • Everything after that is a reduction in points!

More points for tire size.
  • 33" = 1
  • 35" = 2
  • 37" = 4
  • 40" = 6
or something like that...

I'd be in if I can go without chains. I am locked front and rear and have a winch tho.

~Leni

Ordinarily I think this group tends to get a little breathless with whatever new toys we're playing with. We did up and over Paliza for years without chains until someone got smart (actually it was Gorman who holds bragging rights for showing us clueless westerners the virtues of tire chains). However in this case, Leni, chains on the trail would make your life a lot easier. Experience has shown us that the minis (and 40s also) often have a harder time with traction because they are so much lighter than the wagons.

Just an observation...

That depends on grade, ability to dig to dirt, etc. Sometimes lighter is better. Somewhere I saw a study on snow traction - it depends on number and net length of edges contacting the snow. AT's can be better than MT's, and siping really helps. If Leni has 35's with lots of edges I think he could be in good shape, but new 33" MT's are pretty slippery...
