I am interested as well but does anyone out there run one in a cold climate? I have a hard top but can't get in to the garage with top on & my best top is not holding up the greatest.

He has bow sets for sale in the Parts For Sale section right now. VERY rare to be able to buy just the bows...$600 a set...great price. I'd jump on that, first, and work out the top later...

You won't be able to get in to the garage with the PakiTop on either. It sits at least as high as the hard top, plus your rear springs slightly decompress due to the lighter weight giving the truck a greater overall height. Also the bows are not meant to be taken down and stowed and then quickly deployed (though it is a 1 man job unlike the hard top).

Garth, thanks for the heads up. I now have a 74 and earlier set reserved for me. Usually by the time I finally get around to checking the for sale section whatever I wanted is already gone.

I have done some pretty good searches on the subject, and most of the info is out there...just not alll in one spot.

I would like to see a decent "complete" review/installation of the Paki-tops. Maybe an idea of what you need to do to mount one...seems like there is a lot of drilling.

Has anyone done both a Paki-top and a hardtop...changing them out for winter/summer?

Also, I like the look of the canvas top but can it handle the cold and wet of the midwest. The vinyl style is OK, I just prefer the look of the canvas material better.

It seems that most owners only roll up the sides (al least that is what the pictures suggest)...so are they a complete PIA to take off all of the way...or what?

Enquiring minds would like to know.

They are a pain in the arse to put on and take off. I leave mine on with the sides and rear rolled up when it's hot. Driving around with the sides down and the rear rolled up leads to exhaust fumes in the vehicle.

I don't have a hard top but I think most here run the soft top 12 months of the year with only a few minor mods to stop cold air and snow/rain blowing in.

Canvas looks better than vinyl, but it needs a lot of preventative maintenance to keep it waterproof, recoloured and mildew free. I was lucky with mine, it's a 1970s factory toyota vinyl top. All the cool looks of an olive drab canvas top with far less maintenance required.

There are a bunch of threads on all this.

OCD makes some fantastic looking OEM tops right here in the good ol USA.

New to the FJ scene. Is the Paki top considered the way to go for soft tops?

That sounds like a Jeep question. :hillbilly:

"The way to go" depends on what which way you want to go. If you just want a soft top, there are surely cheaper models out there. If you want it to match the factory soft tops, then the Paki top is nearly the only game in town, although OCDBeetle has been making some lately too.

That said, we've got a Paki top for the 40. I really, really like the Factory Soft Top (FST) style over the aftermarket tops. It's pretty much the only thing that I would consider, but that's just me.

Cool- thanks. I just tried to send an email through the website but it said it was full or something. Any ideas on how to get a hold of them for questions and/or ordering?

Paki tops:
Tops are made in Pakistan
They come in canvas or vinyl.
Canvas needs a lot of maintenance, vinyl does not.
Pakitops have the classic FJ40 look. Cost is $600.
The bows are OEM reproduction. Cost is $600.

OCDBeetle makes a nice top out of a modern canvas commonly used in marine applications.
These are made in the US and I don't think it needs any maintenance, but don't quote me. His design offers a more modern look and the possibility of tinted windows.
Current cost is $640 but will be going up by a couple of hundred when he starts accepting orders again according to his vendor thread.
He does not offer bows.

Pilgram Restorations offers bows for $700.
Real Steel offers bows for $800.

Spector Offroad offers a vinyl top that fits over OEM bows for somewhere around $1,000, however it is not the most attractive design.

So, there are some options out there.

Ask and you shall receive! That's probably the most concise answer to this question ever Alex. If we didn't already have one, you'd be getting a call from us.

Thank you for the layout!

Currently, we have committed to a hardtop rebuild....if you take into consideration the cost of weatherstripping and window seals (that is, IF you can even source them). BTW:I am talking about doing it right with OEM components, not with the pathetic excuse of aftermarket components currently available. All of a sudden....going with a soft top seems to be the economical choice.

If you sell your old hardtop...it may even get enough cash for a set of bows

The only downside to a Paki-top appears to be the amount of drilling into the tub that is needed...I think that would spell doom for any stock tub here in the midwest.
