Hello getting ready to install my safari snorkel and have seen some people with their's painted to match body color. Any info on prep of the snorkel before painting? Just primer and then paint? thanks

You will need to get some adhesion promoter like Bulldog or something similar.

You will need to prep just like any other surface (doubt you want to sand much as I don't think the surface is smooth).

You will need one light coat of promoter, then let it dry. You will also need to mix a little into your paint. It will help to keep the paint from becoming brittle and chipping off the plastic as it expands/contracts with temperature.

All I have seen colormatched is a white snorkel on a white LX, what color is your rig?

its galactic grey; from all the search i have been doing it may be to much work to prep the snorkel first. I have the paint to match the vehicle and a friend has a air brush equipment but I afraid the paint may not last on the snorkel and then it will chip off etc. thanks for the info anyway I will check for the gorilla stuff

I hope the pictures work. Hell of a time trying to link them.

If you are planning to paint the snorkle I would suggest smoothing it out.

It takes more work and more priming but the end result is worth it.

I took 120 grit on an orbital and smoothed out the texture. I used adhesion promoter and then a hi-solids primer. I repeated the sanding and reprimed as the texture is very thick. Final sand with 400 and then paint.

Painting without removing the texture makes it look like you just took a can and sprayed it. The gloss level won't be the same with all the texture.

Oh yeah and paint it pearl white.

can't see the pics; i'm gonna check with my air brush guy and see what he does when doing plastics. I know he does helmets, motor bikes etc. so not sure if he has plastic stuff.

I had my snorkel painted before I first put it on but the paint didn't hold and started to crack off. When I got all the paint back off I realised I thought it looked better unpainted because the truck is mostly black at that level i.e. tinted windows, black trims round them  Probably depends on truck colour but painted may make it stand out more than black.

I painted mine and it all came off. I used Bulldog but sprayed the paint too thick. Took it to a shop and they painted it for $100. I think I spent five times that amount trying to do it myself.

My advice to you is to swap with someone who has had their snorkel in the sun and elements for your brand new one. Win win for both. Second, I would pay someone to paint it before I did it again myself.

Mine was painted on my old 80 and held up fine over the years. Shined as good as the truck until the day it sold.

Phil, is that glossy black on your snorkel?
