Paint types

Am getting ready to finish my fj40 and need some help on choosing paint types. Single stage or base/clear? Does anyone know where to get quality sky blue or the code?

You may also try a single stage "wet look" option. All the look of a base / clear but in a single stage paint.

Basically you lay down the single stage as normal, then add a "clearcoat" of the same single stage paint but using only the binder mixed with about 10 - 20% color. Looks real good, and can be repaired a bit easier than a base / clear system.

I think its generally more suited to an offroad type rig such as an FJ40.

Sure...

The binder is basically the same as the paint you buy, without the color added. (clear) So you will need about a half gallon of binder to shoot the exterior of a typical fj40. maybe a bit more.

After applying the single stage as normal, you mix in some of the regular paint 10 - 20% into the "binder" paint. Then shoot that ontop of the single stage. You need to do this just after painting the single stage "normal" paint. Its like adding another coat of paint. Wait till the final "normal" coat flashes, then add the "clearcoat". With so much clear or "binder" it acts very similar to a clearcoat. Very glossy.

this is an old technique thats been used in all types of single stage paints. You can use this with Laquers, Urathanes, enamels etc. Kind of an old school way of shooting a base / clear.

Some people do this procedure in "baby" steps. As in they start the first coat normal, then the second coat is 50 / 50 color / binder, then the third coat is 25 / 75 color / binder, then the last coat is 10 / 90 color / binder.

If you shoot straight binder over the top of the color, then basically you are doing a base clear. Most people dont like it this way because of pre mature yellowing that may occur, and also you lose the easy fixability of the single stage.

I will be doing this when I paint my 69 here in about a month or so. I'll post up some pics / writeup when I do...

You can also apply a real clear coat over many single stage paints if applied within the recoat window. The product tech sheets will tell you if/when you can do this.
