Hi All -

I've tried two paint stores now - PPG and Sherwin Williams - trying to get some paint to match my existing paint on my FJ40. Both used the camera, mixed the paint, agreed it didn't match and said they'd "work on it". Both times when I went back they hadn't "worked on it" and thus I couldn't get paint.

Anyone know of someone around the CLT area that's good with color matching? I don't mind throwing said individual a cash tip for the effort in addition to the cost of paint / materials if that gets the job done.

Many thanks in advance!
Jeff

Is it a factory color? Sorry, I can't remember your 40.

Not sure John - was painted by the original owner 15 yea ago. He was tragically killed by a lightning strike so I can’t ask. I have some documents showing where he was researching paint codes but that’s about it.

Could I order some touch up paint in the two original beige paint codes and try that???

Thanks!

You could try FinishMaster, but I think you will have the same problem. Most paint matching happens at the shop level not the supplier. There is a shop in Waxhaw that people have used and like.

Spitballing here. The NAPA on Wilkinson mixes paint into aerosol cans, IIRC. @roadstr6 might confirm? I don’t know if they have the capability to color match on their own. You might want to take off a small panel for someplace to test; footwell vent or gas cap might be easy enough.

NAPA on Wilkinson can do it if you bring them a piece to scan. Not sure how good they are at it though. I had them do some spray cans for me a few years ago and they were just okay.
Another one worth a try is the Advance Auto in Stallings. It used to be a paint supply store affiliated with Carquest. All the Carquest locations got bought out by Advance Auto. The paint section is still operational and the folks in that store seem to be knowledgeable. I'm going to get them to try to match the tan on my 55. We will see how it goes. I took the gas tank fill door in there and showed it to them. They seemed confident that they could do it. There are two main guys that I see every time. The younger one seems to be more confident in his paint matching ability. I apologize, but I do not have a name for him.

@Jeff Elliott Your truck looks like Dune Beige 416 to me. It's a grayish tan. It doesn't look like Beige 464, which is lighter and more yellow. Believe it or not I actually own a 40 in each of those colors if you want to bring a piece by to match it up. Let me know. Filler door is an easy one to bring, or a kick vent.

A little MUD searching and I came up with this code for Dune Beige 416: Martin-senour paint code# 53-71107-00-A.

Also for PPG paint the code is:
OEM: T416 Toyota
DCC23754
Dune Beige

Found this too, if it helps. It lists a different Martin Senour code from the one above, but one may be an old # and one a new # for the same color:

Paint Manufacturer Codes
PPG/Ditzler : 23754
Dupont : 34882
Acme/Rogers : 91248
Martin Senour : 21620

Thanks All!

I'm going to compare a part from my rig to Dave's Dune Beige rig to see how close they are. Will report back.

Special thanks to @roadstr6 for kindly hosting me at his awesome garage to compare a part of my rig to a known dune beige truck he owns... It's a match so mystery solved! Now, I've got to paint those fenders and get her back on the road.

Thanks to all
