Have a very good friend that has a 96 that has a issue with his overdrive light, it seem to flicker on and off when ever it feels like. It has no effect on the tranmission at all so it must be some kind of lose connection. Does anybody now were the connector is for this light?

Have you seen it?

Is it really just "flickering", or is it flashing and therefore trying to tell him that there are trouble codes he can pull?

No I have not seen it. And I had no idea that when the overdrive light flashes it meens trouble codes. I will let him know. Thank you

Is this strictly an OBDII feature or is it present in the OBDI 80s also?

Definitely not a feature on 91-92's, since no electronics on the A440F tranny. May or may not be a feature of the 93-94 A442F; I don't know.

Edit: Actually, I think it *is* a feature of the A442F. You use the same check connector under the hood as you do for the CEL, just different terminals. FSM would show it...

I think it's an A343F feature only. I don't think the A442F has an OD button or even a light...

So after reading my Haynes manual the 93-94 (A442F w/OBDII) is equiped with the self diagnosis feature, that is, you jump terminals TT and E1 on OBDI connector and count O/D light flashes......Vwala.

The 95-96 OBDII systems will signal a malfunction with the flashing O/D light, you then read the code with your OBDII code reader.

The 93-94 is NOT OBD2 ( I think you just made a typo). It just has the Toyota diagnostic connectors. The procedure you mentioned is for pulling codes from the TCM. After jumping the terminals, make sure the OD button is ON, then turn key on, and watch the blinks. To pull engine control codes, you jump TE1 and E1, turn key to on, and watch the CEL. This info is found in the FSM on page AT-17. As far as 95+, I don't know.

Hello and Merry Xmas!!! , I’m new in here... I own a '98 HDJ80(on it's first week with me) with a A442F tranny....Yesterday for the first time I saw this exact issue with my overdrive light... with no effect on the gears (overdrive was ON and running on fourth), the light blinked on and off in exact intervals… even when I restarted the engine.
My cruiser’s engine is a 1HD-T, so the diagnostics port is only for the tranny… recently I gave maintenance to this transmission, changed the filter, oil, and installed a small trans-cooler

What can this blinking mean??? I don’t own a scanner…

There’s another issue but I don’t know if it’s related, the velocimeter gauge on my cruiser always start working ok, then goes crazy and finally stops working until I restart the car and this process loops. The fact that is start working again with every engine restart, tells me that maybe this gauge is not like my Zook that uses an analog velocimeter cable, and maybe it’s driven by some electric system or something.

I Also installed a CDL switch, which I engage and the only thing that lights is the ABS warning light but no “Diff Lock” ligth (maybe a bad sensor switch)

maybe this two issues can be the reason for that overdrive light blinking.

Welcome to MUD riberware.

You have an interesting combo (98 cruiser with a a442 tranny), and for anyone with one of these USDM 80s to help you I think we might be just guessing.

The OD light blinking tells me that you have OBDII (or part of it)
and I think you will need a code reader.

Does the light blink on-off-on-off-on-off without any pauses.

With the OBDI paper clip code puller method the light blinks on-off-on-off-pause-on-off-on-off-on-off-on-off-on-off-then repeats (code 25)

Then again it is always possible you can pull the codes with a paper clip in your truck, do you have access to a service manual, I think I would start there.
Maybe post up a thread looking for members like yourself below the tropic of cancer.....................worst your going to get is a welcome:flipoff2:

Thanks Marlin375, I just got home from a test run and I noticed a few details:

1. The OD light starts blinking after the speedometer stops working...

2. no pauses between the blinks, at least I didn't notice anyone...

3. At high speeds when I can hear the turbo boosting at sometime the speedo seems to work for a few seconds and then dies again... but when this happens the "OD" light blinks dissapear.... very odd.

I have a friend with the original service manuals I'll call him tomorrow and try to fix this myself.

Sounds like a loose connection on a speed sensor.
From what I can tell from my manual there are two speed sensors located near the rear of the trany on the USDriverSide, could be you bumped one while doing your fluid/filter change?

Resolution:

Yesterday I took the VSS out clean the hell out of it... now my speedo is back and the OD light blinking is gone for good....

Thanks...
