Guess i should spill the beans here and just say it for all to see. Maybe it will save someone else the heartache.

Everyone probably knows by now that we got a new puppy a few months back, infact i think there was a body swap going on that day.

Anyway we keep him on a 20 - 25 foot lead line out back so he could get some fresh air and out of the house unsupervised. Last Sunday evening i was sitting out there with him while the wife was putting the horses in. As any dog i have had he would get it tangled up on one of his legs but nothing bad would happen and it would work its way back straight again with him just walking around.

Not this time. He seen the cat over by the barn and took off. Normally he would stop just shy of running out of line, but not this time and it was very ugly and a screaming i never want to hear again in my entire life. It was so loud / bad the neighbors heard it and came running from their house, and everyone that has been here they are not close house wise.

Finally got him in the house after about an hour and she spent the night with him hoping it was nothing bad. But again it was something bad.

Took him to our vet of 25 years and did xrays. Broken Femur / Tibia. Now he is in Cary at a fine facility getting operated on right now as i type this.

Luckily they were clean breaks and they will heal.

But it is going to be close to 4,000 for all of this.

So, i have tossed that lead line to the dump and will never use / allow another one at my house / place for my entire rest of life however long / short that may be.

BLUF ( bottom line up front ) Please really think about how you have your pets in control.

Thanks for reading and hopefully this will save some other family serious pain.

BTW, our animals are our children, but that story is for a different day.

man that really sucks. I hope all the best for a speedy recovery.

Dang man. Hate to hear it, but glad the pup will heal up. I know it may not seem like it, but it coulda been worse.

I know all about expensive vet bills. Between Marley's $4k surgery (died the next day) and having spent thousands on our cats over the last few years, I know it's tough. Like you said though, they're our kids too.

Poor cruiser. I was there the day robin brought him home pwr steering install. I hope for a speedy recovery. Darin if u need any help just let me know.

Wishing your dog a speedy recovery!

I had a line like that when we had a dog and she used to get tangled, but didn't think much bad would come from it. Obviously I was wrong. Don't beat yourself up over this, could of happen to anyone. Sounds like your baby is in good hands!

That sucks Darin, I feel your pain.

Had a similar thing with my pup when he was younger. He jumped off a second story balcony when he was 5 months old. Orthoscopic surgery on his front leg. I think it taught him a lesson, all though an expensive one for me. Been the best dog ever since then...

Man, we can relate. Ours has epilepsy and the medicine she is on makes her extremely hungry. Because of that, she has gotten into the trash and eaten food covered wine corks that she couldn't pass. $3500 a pop and her meds, we have about a $15k dog. So much for a dog that we got for free. Good luck and i'll see you tomorrow.

That's a tough pill to swallow, but it comes in many flavors - dogs and cats will always get into something. It really sucks when you think it was caused by something you did, and it always was, in the grand scheme of things, because we are their guardians same as if it were a human child. I feel lucky that I've never been pounded like a $4000 drum all at one time.

Tying up a dog is necessary evil sometimes. I had to do it for a while when we bought a new house a few years ago that couldn't be fenced and they'd have had access to creeks and woods. My male GSD got tangled a good bit but would realize it and stop moving till he figured out how to undo himself. My female GSD never seemed to tangle. This was only done for short periods. I won't do it now, but she never leaves my side in our yard anyway at 12 years old. He passed last November and it's been much easier to keep eyes on one strong willed dog.

Bacchus used to tangle up in his leash when we got him. I taught him to "Fix It" and refused to keep walking until he was free. Took a few months but I think it made him more aware.

Cruiser will heal fast as a young dog. Hopefully he'll mellow out just as fast. Best wishes.

Dang Darin, that stinks big time, but glad you all are doing ok. I know it's too far for you - but anyone in the Charlotte area - if you need a good emergency/specialized vet, especially one that deals with cancer - Carolina Vet Specialists (http://www.carolinavet.com/) are great. I've been going to the Matthews location for about a year now, and it's a nice clean vet with super doctors and techs - they have other locations, but can only talk about the Matthews location - hope Cruiser heals quick. :)

Our normal vet we use is here in Nam and is great, but because he is a large breed dog and is still a pup she was not comfortable doing the needed surgery on him and then recomended us to this other place. She is very honest with us and has been great to deal with over the years. Only thing we have ever had is large bread dogs. So she is very used to us.

From the looks of it he will be coming home Thursday afternoon.

Wife said the surgeon could care less about the humans he is dealing with but is totally focused on your animal. That is perfect with me.

Holy cow that sucks Darin. The SPCA where we adopted Leucas made us sign papers stating that we would never tether him, so now I know why. Insane that he was moving fast enough to break his own leg.

Hopefully he heals up quickly!

I will second that. One of our cats has a hereditary heart valve issue, so I spend $$$$ there once a year at the heart specialist at the Matthews location.

Darin, I feel your pain and wish all to have a speedy recovery.

Darin, so sorry to hear this. I had to use a tether for my black lab years ago when in PA. I ran a cable from the back of the house to a tree on the rear property line and used a pulley/trolley with a lead from that. This keeps the lead in the air rather than on the ground. This may work for you if you need to keep the dog restrained in the future.

Darin I hope you got him back by now and Cruiser is doing well! That truly does suck, and I can completely empathize.
