WOW!

Glad to know everyone is safe. Vehicle did it's job by protecting you and your family. I would think that someone else was also watching over you as well. While we all love our trucks, it is something that can be replaced while your family cannot.

Holy hell. Two SD area rollovers. Just glad the entire family is ok. You obviously had the kids in seat belts too! Good for you.

That looked like it was pretty violent. Glad to see you are ok. The FJC wheels narrowed the track width, the vehicle was lifted, and it had a RTT. It was also going 75-80 MPH. All of these significantly increased the possibility of a roll over. Add a tire blow out. Scary!!!

Wow! Glad you and the family could walk away from that one.

Curious as to what loading rating were your BFG ATKO's, D or E?

Thank God you and your family walked away ! :)

Where there any plugs or patches on the blown tire?

It's interesting, but according to TireRack for the BFT AT 285/70R17, both D and E have a load rating of 3195 lbs.

Either way, the load rating should have been way more than what the Cruiser would have required, even fully loaded.

Simply amazing. Glad you and the kids are ok. God was definitely looking after you....

Glad to know that you family is OK. I am curious to know what you experienced leading up to and in an attempt to recover? A rear tire blow out should not have such an adverse effect on the handling of the vehichle. I concur with other about the RTT, narrow wheelbase, but were there other distractions, i.e. screaming kids, tiredness, scanning instrument disrtactions-iPod, GPS, etc.... ? I have a 2 and 3 year old that consitently travel with me and with out a co-pilot I spend a lot of time trying to manage them while driving- dangerous I know, and your accident has me changing/re-thinking my travel plans/management. I know this is a horrorific event that a had a good outcome, but can you shed more light on the accident so others may learn.

Glad you and the family made it through safely!!! nasty spill there.
I never worries so much about a blowout on the 80 (vs SOA) but now might change that POV.

Glad your family made it out ok. Looks bad from the pics. Just got chills from this and the other So Cal member on the southern strech of the 15 fwy.

Glad your all OK. How many times did it roll if you recall? Just curious to find out due to the RTT. I have a full African Outback Rack and am curious to find out if that really did help or hurt your chances.

At stock height, the 80s roof load rating would be fine for a 130lb load, but with a lift AND larger tires I think the dramatic increase in rollover risk simply has to be accepted by the owner. These vehicles have an increased rollover danger due to their type and design intent (highly capable offroad) versus a conventional passenger car that many here on the list choose to ignore or understate.

I'm sorry to see this happen and pleased the fundamentally strong chassis kept the OP's family from being hurt. Great news.

Those with lifts, non stock wheels and tires and especially those who've removed crucial safety items like swaybars really need to understand that they are accepting a potentially deadly risk. I read too many posts here by amateurs claiming that the vehicle "still feels fine" in emergency maneuvers, etc. As I have many times here on Mud, I will put the title of my 80 up against anyone's who claims their vehicle is stable and I will roll their vehicle within 90 seconds in the parking lot of any store to prove it. These vehicles roll and it's only in the instant that you are in extreme danger that you will find this out.

Drive safe,

DougM

Doug,

Are you saying that those warnings about rollovers on the visors about are real? :D

Thank Goodness that you and your family are OK. Makes me enjoy my Cruiser even more knowing that it can save lives. Completely unrelated but it's a shame that sometimes it takes an instance like this to remind us, not to take anything for granted in life. Appreciate your loved ones and friends everyday that you are alive.

Thank God everyone is OK. I find it odd that no one has brought up the idea that maybe b.c he WAS driving a cruiser he rolled. What vehicle were you driving previous to this one that was lifted and narrowed base? Was it lifted etc. Sounds like to me that you rolled b.c you were driving this cruiser. Thousands of people blow tires everyday and don't roll. I was in a van/suv thing driven by a kid in India going way too fast for the road and the cow and goats that walk in front of you and blew a rear tire and didn't flip. These pictures and your story ARE a testament to how these LC's stand up to a roll.

I believe you are right, You were being looked out for in that wreck. I had to pull my wife in and show her, as I have a 4, 2 year old, and another due in a about two weeks...
