Wow, I'm glad you and your family are safe and un-harmed.:)

As a parent with a 6 yr old, 4 yr old, and a 2 yr old I am very happy that everyone is ok. One of the reasons I chose a Land Cruiser was for the safety factor as compared to anything else.

glad that everyone got out of it safely! once again, a Cruiser stands up to its name.

I am glad everyone was OK. The truck definatly took one for the team. Now to find a replacement.

Ok so I have been showing people this link and bragging about the LCs ruggedness. One of them brought up a good point, he mentioned that perhaps the RTT was enough top weight to cause an overturn if you lose control from the blow out. No one could know for sure but it did make me give it pause.

Perhaps. But maybe the RTT also helped distribute the forces from the rollover too. Look at the passenger area. It is almost intact. In fact it looks great where the tent was. I'd doubt an 130lbs on the roof was enough to cause a 6,000 lbs vehicle to flip. People all over the country load their SUV's and minivan's roofs with as much if not more weight. Fact is a blowout at 75mph is deadly serious and few people can control their vehicle at those speeds if it happens. I see it almost on a daily basis at work, which is why my family will only ride in big, heavy, tank-like SUV-aka Landcruisers. I'll pay the MPG penalty to know we are in a solid vehicle.

The clamps on the rack/tent are even still tight on the rain gutters. My $.02 says that thing helped more than hurt your situation. Glad to see all is ok. I have my 2,4,10,12 yr olds in my 80 constantly.

Hard to say. There are a lot of variables. Such what did the driver do right after the blow out. A sudden steering wheel correction, then adding weight on top or shifting cargo inside, or going off the highway, change in terrain, sudden drop going off the highway, etc...

It does look the the RTT helped maintain the integrity of the roof. So while it could have contributed, it might also have saved.

amazing! glad your family is ok.....this is why i dont hesitate to drive any and all family members in my vehicle on long trips. done it before and ill do it again. these trucks, when in good working order of course, are very safe vehicles.

Thank goodness you and your family are OK. I'm sure glad I drive a Land Cruiser!

At first I couldn't figure out how a flat tire would cause a roll over, but the picture of the tire is worth a thousand words. Amazing.

The Land Cruiser is replacable. Very glad to hear you and your family is OK.

My thought on the tire is to start with what pressure the tire was at when it blew. I'm wondering if it was over pressurized, not necessarily when it was last aired up but maybe a combination of being aired up to max pressure + extreme heat, higher speeds, etc. Maybe if someone had put some fix a flat stuff in it, that might have aggravated things. Just a shot in the dark.

Ouch! Glad everyone is ok! Looks like one nasty blow out!

WOW!! Yeah, that is one hell of a blowout. Happy to hear that everyone is safe. I drive everywhere with my 8 and 6 year old boys in my Cruiser, and as much as my wife wants me to get into something smaller (Audi A4 or something) I flat out refuse. Fireguy nailed it: "I'll pay the MPG penalty to know we are in a solid vehicle."

Are you sure just by blowing a tire? Wouldn't this happen more often to land cruiser.... I'd be scared to know that anytime I'm out and I blow a tire there is chance for me to roll over.

I'm glad everyone made it out ok.

Due to the high center of gravity of SUVs, all of us that drive them are at increased risk of a roll over when compared to a car. That's not to say don't drive them - just be aware of the situation.

Anything that raises the center of gravity can increase the likelyhood of a roll over during quick maneuvering. This vehicle had an RTT, 3" lift & 285 tires. All of which would contribute to a higher center of gravity when compared to stock. It was also fully loaded, which would make it hard to correct once control was being compromised.

Just be aware, drive safe & wear your seat belts. If your truck rolls you don't want to be chucked from it and have it roll over you.

Also glad everyone made it out OK. it appears to also have a narrower track width due to the fj cruiser wheels. I imagine all these little factors add up.

Wow, that is a serious reminder as to why most of us bought these. Glad to hear that everyone came out a bit shaken, but unharmed. My five-year-old son rides in his Recaro kid seat with the five-point harness fastened even going down our driveway.

Also wondering about the root cause of the blowout itself, as I run a set of BFG ATKO's. What PSI do you normally air-up at when cold? Any off-road-cuts or rock hits which could have contributed? How hot was it out that day?

As others noted, the most important thing is that the truck is replaceable, and that it did it's job protecting the family.

Steve
