About 4 years ago my cv's had slight leaks coming from the small end of the inner boot. Per this forum I bought the smooth edge mcmaster carr clamps (small and large) installed the small one's on the leaky ends and problem solved. Today I noticed the inner passenger side boot was slinging a small amount of grease from the large end... my questions..
should I buy the SST and try to tighten the clamp or should I remove it and replace with the large mcmaster carr clamp? If I remove the clamps any suggestions as to "how" without buggering the boot (i don't exactly remember how i removed the small clamps)? And finally, I'm going to address the CV's this summer. Should I OEM reboot or OEM replace? The reboot kits are about $100 each, while the CV's are $370. I'm thinking the $270 might be worth not dealing with refurbishing old cv boots/grease/clamps.... Welcome thoughts.

I don’t remember those kits being over $60. You will need a clamping tool, they are about $20 on Amazon. It’s a dirty job but I thought it was kind of fun. Serra Toyota sale would be good for either new drive shaft or drive shaft reboot. Good luck!

Thanks for the response and the links. The Boot kit only has 1 Boot, so 2 kits are needed per cv, that's why I'm not sure if a new oem axle for $370 is a decent tradeoff.

That’s not true. You only need 2. These are what I ordered.

Ok. Maybe I'm being dense but toyota parts deal has the boot kit for $58. It comes with one boot and the site says that two are required. Partsouq, has a kit with 2 boots but it's about $110... Let me know if I'm wrong, it wouldn't be the first time... Anyway I took off the factory boot clamp and put on the mcmaster carr just as a stop gap. I cleaned everything up so we'll see if the leak stops and I can address this summer as this spring I'm gonna the fuel filler, tank straps, tank protector, and replace brake lines while the tank is down.

I get it. The last thing you want to do is waste money. If you scroll the pictures of the boot kit from Toyota parts deal it will show 2 different boots. It is a little deceiving since they don’t show both boots at the same time.

Ooh. So the kit comes with 2 boots for $58... And is there 1 tube of grease or two? My assumption is that there is enough grease for both boots in the kit... Usually partsouq has the best prices including shipping, but their cv's are about $500 and the boot kits are $110. I'm not sure why they are more expensive on the cv stuff...

Comes with 2 tubes of grease. If you think about it, 2 kits per CV would not work since there are 2 different boots per CV. The 3rd picture which is a drawing clearly shows 2 boots. 2 kits are needed for your vehicle. Cruiser Outfitters is an outstanding business and we are lucky to have them. However the savings would allow you to purchase the clamping tool. Cruiser Outfitters would definitely ease your mind with the proper kits if you are still unsure. Either way, I thought it was kind of a fun job but very messy.

If your axles/boots are old I'd just plan on replacing them both. I did an inner boot on mine a few years ago but the axles didn't that many miles/time on them.

The complete kit comes with two boots and two different tubes of grease that are specific to each boot. I also wouldn't bother with the factory clamps, get some of the nice worm clamps. Most of the clamp tools out there are garbage.

Forget factory clamps. Use the worm drive smooth edge people are talking about. Carefully tighten the clamps, not to over tighten and cause boot to rip. The hardest part of the job is to get the axle out of the truck.

I'm using the mcmaster carr smooth edge/narrow clamps to address leaks until I reboot or replace. You can see one on the small end of the boot that i put on 4 years ago. Just put one on the large end of my leaking boot last night.

You can loosen and rotate the clap and retighten and see if it works

I really like partsouq.com but the thing to realize, is they aren’t across the board the best price. Some parts are less than half what you’re gonna pay at a dealer. For instance, you wouldn’t buy brake discs and pads from them because they’re likely more than the dealer. But it’s always a good idea to shop around.

Get the boot kit from Cruiser Outfitters, McMaster Carr clamps, and some kerosine. There a a couple of good YouTube videos on it as well. I did it a couple of years ago and it wasn't to bad. Original CV bearings were fine and just needed fresh boots and grease. Don't get aftermarket CV's if you go that route. If you have a lift get the diff drop kit to, it will make a difference on the CVs

Also, you may want to get new CV seals as well while you're at it. I think they are like $20 a piece. If you get the seals be careful on the install and rent a seal punch tool from the parts store. There's some good videos on YouTube for this to.

I'm seeing two different oil seals associated with the CV's. Are the rh/lh different?

Another thing to take into consideration when deciding which route to go is the condition of the outer splines. If they are showing any signs of wear it may be better to buy a new axle or full rebuild kit.

I'm just pointing this out because it would be a bummer to go through the effort to reboot the cv axles only to realize that the outer splines were on their way out. 🙂

Additionally, here's some food for thought... (I'm not affiliated)
