Pro tip! When installing the boots onto the axle itself it can be very tight and hard to slip on, I usually dunk the boot in some hot water to soften it up and this helps it flex a little bit too. Saves a lot of swearing and time.

Great point. Splines are good. Reset the bearing pre-load about 20 months ago, so there's no slop.Another thing to take into consideration when deciding which route to go is the condition of the outer splines. If they are showing any signs of wear it may be better to buy a new axle or full rebuild kit.
I'm just pointing this out because it would be a bummer to go through the effort to reboot the cv axles only to realize that the outer splines were on their way out.
