Please do not forget SC has taking a beating as well. My area is covered with the working poor and many of them have lost a great deal as well. Right here in Chesnee there are several groups feeding people daily, the turn out is large for just a hot meal. One thing in need aside from food and water are able bodied folks with chain saws and trucks to pull trees off driveways and homes. I am very fortunate as I can afford a crane crew to pull the large tree off of my home. Many are not that fortunate. This is true of little towns all over this area. We spent some time over the week delivering food and ice to friends in need and having people we know without a generator and cooking methods to come over and eat. Just paying for someone's groceries helps more than you can imagine. I have missed a full week in the shop, many many more still either can not get to work or their work has been shut down due to no power or water. We are fortunate to have city water, a great many are on wells with no power. They were trucking in 400 gallons of water a day to the riding barn where Heather keeps her jumper until one of the fathers rigged up a generator to the well there.

^^^^^ @NCFJ So true. The damage is widespread beyond the geographic region that most people assume. I'm in CT right now and people I've talked to mostly have no idea that anywhere other than Asheville got the storm. I guess they tend to forget that a qualifier like "western" or "southern" can easily encompass an area bigger than their own tiny little state.

Also, unless someone has had a tree land on their house, they might have no idea how bad the little damages can all add up. We got new floors on the ground floor and basement a few years back because a tree that only poked a couple small holes (that were quickly patched) in the roof at one end had also tweaked a gutter ever so slightly on the other end, causing a night's rain the next week to deflect to just above an exterior door which was directly above an basement exterior door. Boom - water incursion for 8+ hours down the walls and into the doors that weren't quite as well sealed as they appeared. Even I couldn't fathom how that little metal wrinkle ended up as a $25K+ repair that rearranged my living arrangement for about 2 weeks.

Hey guys I'm trying to organize a supply run from Northern VA down to wherever/whoever needs it. I don't want to drive around aimlessly in NC or SC. So who needs what and where I should go? Anybody have a point of contact or a central location I should aim for if I'm able to get some supplies together? I started a similar conversation under the Capital Land Cruiser Club section and @iptman directed me here. How can we help?

Awesome that you (and others want to help, it’s great!).

The southwestern part of the state probably needs most currently (from what I’ve read). I know (after being in Ashe county this weekend), that a lot of the local volunteer fire departments and churches are getting the point where they are running out of storage space for donations. It’s not that people don’t need the supplies but those that need it most can’t go get it and needs it brought to them.

Point is, check locally where you want to donate and see what help is needed most!

Great advice @S4Cruiser . I reached out to Todd Volunteer Fire Department and verified I should be able to reach them. They posted an updated supply list on their facebook page. I'm going to try to gather as much stuff as possible from now until Friday and make my run early Saturday morning.

Awesome, same thing we did this past Friday.

One of the things we’ve always suggested giving out is Walmart gift cards. They’re easy to transport, people can use them for their specific needs, the money spent going back into the local economy. Some people complain about Walmart but they pledged 10 million to Helene relief. Going shopping also provides some retail therapy to get away from their situation and do something “normal”.

As far as who to donate to there is a lot of amazing groups doing good work. My personal favorite is Samaritans purse. I’ve volunteered with them for over 10 years and they do phenomenal work and are always one of the first on scene when disaster strikes. Happy to provide more info if you’d like.

As the SAR winds down and that area just needs help clearing trees, clean up, etc maybe we can organize a volunteer work trip to go help. Not sure exactly what will be needed but I’m sure volunteers will be needed for a while.

The clean up and other efforts will be ongoing for months.
Let me know. I'd like to take part of we can make this happen.

Seconding Samaritans Purse. I went Saturday to Asheville to help through them. If someone has friends or colleagues looking to help, I’d start there. They provide supplies and coordinate logistics. I heard 1000 people showed up Saturday that they processed. They have three major volunteer areas in WNC currently. Our group of 50-60 people transformed one little street by removing trees from cars, houses, driveways, etc. Then we installed tarps & roof covering since nearly every house had some type of roof damage. But it was just one small street (10-12 homes). Sad thing is there are thousands of streets needing the same help so residents can get in and out of their house safely and avoid more damage to home and property..

Hey good morning @Hokie LX I'm planning to drive down to Todd Volunteer Fire Department late Friday or early Saturday morning with supplies. They posted a list of supplies on their facebook page. Are you guys still gathering supplies at the Hickory Campus of App State? Should I go there instead?

I'm not sure. That was a drop point for Operation Airdrop/CERT when they were still working the area as they were helicoptering supplies out of Hickory regional airport. Both of those orgs are immediate response orgs so they are in the area immediately after an event for a limited period of time to help organize the response and handle critical needs. I believe OA is now heading to FL and CERT is moving up towards the TN mountains so my best guess is that they are not taking donations at that location anymore.

I also support Samaritans Purse as a worthy cause as well. However, as you are planning, local FD's are taking donations to distribute. The roads in the area at opening up which is a good thing and a lot of supplies are now being run by 4x4 truck into the mountains. I'd call Todd FD just to confirm they are taking donations and their hours to receive. Some places have posted online that they are out of storage space for new donations so that's why I'd recommend calling ahead of time. If they are full, I bet they can recommend another drop point.

Another vote for Samaritans Purse. Our company is pulling together a gift matching program to get some more funds to them as I type this.

Unsolicited additional vouching for samaritans purse. They are doing the Lord’s work out there for those poor people.

If you’re still looking for places to donate @lacefro , black mountain has a setup in the ingles parking lot in town there.

So I'm seeing reports that Burke County (Morganton) is running out of space at its collection spots and storage facilities and shut them down this afternoon, sending people further west to find other drop off sites. Maybe because it's the first affected county on 40 when coming from the east thus the easiest to get to?

Our town police are going up to near Banner Elk area. Trying to go as remote as possible. We donate during the week and then they take a trailer (or 2-3) up on the weekend. The list is changing from basic human needs to more camping-like stuff.

At other delivery sites, we are seeing via reports "we don't need more water right now" - I'm guessing they will need water for a very long time, but guessing its just stacked up at donation sites and not able to be delivered out easily.

Hey all,
Bumping this because, well, I just found it, and the headlines have moved on, but I just got back from helping with a group based out of the Spruce Pine area and can confirm there is still a lot of need and work to be done.

To 2nd @NCFJ, SC also had troubles, and those that were impacted I am sorry for. County EOC has stood down here though and utilities are mostly restored. What I have seen and helped with around Spartanburg Co is nothing like what I have experienced in the mountains. I have worked in multiple hurricane areas in coastal areas and was personally hit by Andrew and Rita. Helene more closely resembles my experience in Iraq 2003.

Summary of where I have been:
1st week - Swananoa/Black Mountain, Asheville, Mars Hill, Bat Cave, Spruce Pine and countless fire stations and churches between shuttling supplies and trying to find needs to fill.

3rd week - Tryon with county SAR then Bernardsville, Burnsville, Bean’s Creek, and Spruce Pine for general help.

Churches everywhere are doing their best to process donations that are pouring in but are also trying to figure out how to. It was common to visit one and be asked to take something they had too much of and we would transport it to another that could use it. Currently, anything for heat seems to be the biggest need after this recent cold snap. Generally they are overwhelmed with bottled water and clothes.

I saw Samaritan’s Purse mentioned as a potential donation organization and can confirm they were also active around the towns. The Salvation Army had a relief center set up in hard hit Bernardsville and the locals were grateful to them. The Southern Baptist Disaster Relief was also active with meals and supplies. I can’t speak to any other national organization.

Yesterday our team met a man in Bernardsville that was the first house on the road where a creek jumped the bank. One of the team posted his story if you are interested (he is also shopping for an 80 and will likely be in the ONSC ranks soon).
Teaser, this is the before and after of his front yard:

I hope this is helpful, but will try to answer anything I can from my direct observations. There is a lot or rumor and hearsay that I will not participate in.

Edit: Forgot to mention that the group I was working with is the Venture Unknown Foundation. They are an offroad/overlanding service organization that has used the resources and initiative to morph into a relief group. Anything that has gone to them has absolutely been used responsibility and with helping Helene victims in mind. It has really been great to experience.
