The deductible is how much you pay towards a claim before the insurance company starts paying. There's no way around paying the $1000 in that situation AFAIK.

Thinking further, if you do the work yourself and they cut you a check, you wouldn't pay the $1000 out of pocket to anyone (paying to yourself i guess) but your check is going to be $1000 less than the estimated cost to repair.

I have a guy wanting to buy the truck from Hawaii. He only has 1 post on Tacoma World.

I'm more than a little nervous about this. does this sound legit??

"Jamie I would need your address for the transport company to pick up vehicle. Less than a quarter tank of gas. I will need to wire money to whatever bank you use or whatever payment you would like, or cashiers check perhaps. A bill of sale from you is needed that's what my state requires and the title signed over or released to me. Last vehicle I bought from the continental U.S. they sent those documents over fedex when I wired the money. "

He gave me his number so gonna call him.

No haggling on the price, btw . . another negative.

Many scams like that Jamie. If you choose to proceed, open a separate bank account. Have the money wired there or deposit the check there. Let it clear then remove the funds from that account and put them elsewhere. Only then should you sign over anything or allow the truck to be shipped.

DO NOT SEND ANY TITLE OR BILL OF SALE UNTIL FUNDS HAVE CLEARED AND BEEN REMOVED FROM THE ACCOUNT

That seems very suspect and I wouldn't bother trying to deal with that person..

I've dealt with a similar scam regarding someone claiming to be in the military and deployed. I would wait until you have the cash withdrawn from whatever bank account and in your hand before doing anything. It's amazing how they can spoof numbers, use stolen identities etc. The guy I had I looked up, he was legit, he was overseas and had a bio and everything. I reached out to someone related to them on facebook and was told that there was a spammer who stole his identity while overseas and gave me an agent's number (I don't remember what agency) to report it to.

I get being cautious but that text or email sounds like many I have sent in the past.

just do what Stan says. Makes sense to me.

At the same time. how would he be comfortable transferring money to an account without any guarantees that you will send him the truck.

another thing to think about is the company rhat moves the vehicle to the port. Either to Atlanta, San Diego, or Long Beach. Is def not the same company that ships to Hawaii. And those companies won’t just ship anything for anyone without proof of ownership and or a power of attorney. So you have that to think about as well. (Note: I have shipped several vehicles to and from Hawaii and so has my wife when we used to live their)

So I guess be careful and good luck with the sale

Your truck will sell locally; no need to take risks or waste time trying to make people jump through hoops to prove they're legit. A fully legit buyer with unusual circumstances should present himself in a manner that makes him/her easily verifiable right from the start. As the seller, you have the upper hand to say "here's how I want to do business".

Also, if you are actively engaged in conversation with him, ask him what time it is there. Give him 3 seconds to reply. Any longer and you can assume he's looking it up. That's my take but I'm an ashhole. Hell, it's a red flag if you're not EVER actively engaged in conversation, time difference be damned - a legit buyer will make it happen.

^ what they all said.

Wait for a local buyer.

I told him I would only do a face to face transaction. Thanks everyone!!

BTW - Going to now "come clean" and admit this: I am now a "douchey broverlander" owning a 2020 4Runner - and loving it LOL. The Rav4 and the Tacoma had a baby and this is what came out:

Outside of the depreciation and other factors we are REALLY loving this new truck.

A couple things I have noticed vs 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th gens:

1. Seating position. Still great visibility looking down and around vehicle. Leg room is amazing in the front and better in the back then we expected.
2. Seating comfort. Older 4runners and Tacomas were always somewhat painful with your right knee resting on the transfer case shifter or hitting a parking break, etc. Seats are really firm and the leatherette isn't great for comfort, but look to take a beating. I have ordered some cheap sheep wool covers for them. Head room is better than expected and much better than older trucks. I was able to NOT get a moon roof too - which I love the extra head room and not having to worry about it in the future.
3. Head unit with Android and Apple apps - The android works pretty well - still trying to figure out how to use Audible and the stock Nav, but . . I think it will work fine. Love the larger screen on the '20 - it is also quick and easy to use with touch.
4. Cruise with adaptive controls - became addicted to this with the Rav4 - really enjoy on the road
5. Balance - people who have driven 4runners know they are like cats front to back and side to side. This 4runner feels more like a 3rd Gen on and off road vs the 4th Gen. It moves around like a smaller vehicle.
6. Plenty of space inside the engine compartment. Easy to find space for a second battery.
7. After market stuff - wow - so many choices vs GX or 1st Gen Tundra. We are "keeping it mostly stock" for now.

Should we quote the "keeping it mostly stock for now"????? ;)

Congrats!

You're not really a douchey broverlander till you pay for a overland bound badge or start putting patches in your headliner

Well . .I would like a full length roof rack. I have the stuff for dual batteries now.

I am thinking about doing something dumb in the back end storage. Maybe remove all the plastics up to the rear windows and using extruded ALU to make a frame and storage, fridge slide, etc. Something like this, but not so big:

Hey now, I said "mostly stock for now." :)

I just assume “for now” meant that immediate moment in time with no bearing on any moment in the future.
