well, i picked a oil cooler off a older f350 for 10 bucks....they do these 10 dollar per item days at out local pick yard...its great for stuff like this..
anywho, i'm going to complement the stock tranny cooler with a large power steering cooler. Nice part for the $$. I figure it cant hurt..good source for others wanting auxillary coolers..
Hello, was following your thread, nice work. I have a 1953 Dodge M-37 that I put XL 11.00r16 on 4 years ago. I finaly wore them out. I'm trying to find another set here in AZ. any leads would be appreciated.
you will really like them. 20lbs of air and my 80 rides over stuff so nicely...washbored roads are like fresh pavement. I dont like underdamped vehichles. these shocks have good (heavy) valving for high speed firmness. too bad they arent gas charged. doesnt really matter though. slee's provide all the spring rate i need.
Heck, the tires are 100-105lbs each. Thats like a aluminum 4cyl engine holding down each axle...unsprung weight. I have had it pretty far over and havent picked up a tire yet. It does feel gnarly at first being up that high.
Ok I got the shocks. Wow they are beefy! But I got a question. will these make the axles flex? I mean when I extend the shock there is resistance. But on a gas charged shock it extends itself no resistance. So when the axle droops it would seem to me the shocks would resist that movement where as a gas shock will actually force it down. This make sense? This true?

gas charge will have little effect on forced droop. Unless we are talking a 2.5 or 3.0 diam. shock with 175 psi, most gas charged shocks are not very gas charged....or at least very strong. your big tires and weight of the axles will droop down as far as they can. the longer shocks will allow more travel away from the wheel well. Just look at the rebound damping as a nice controlled drop as one wheel climbs and the other drops way out--nice and controlled.
Of course! I have hundreds of miles of open desert in any direction i go from my home. It flexes very well. No major rubbing issues at all.(my flares are still there) It is very compliant and well balanced in hairy situations and odd angles. Scary to think what kind of trouble i would get myself into with some lockers and these 39's. High speed travel (powerline/ whoops type running) is very stable and well suited. I would never go back to anything less.
Tell Dusty I hate him btw...hehe. That's a sweet RC! You got desert commo now? What antenna setup did you use? I have two cheap CB's in storage I need to get around to installing. I really should just get my license and run a 2-meter setup.
Great buildup! Nice find on the shocks as well. Definately a nice alternative to OME's. Good find on the tranny cooler as well. The auto and its TC don't like the heat down there and those tires. Are you in Havasu or further north? The CO River was my old stomping grounds back in the mid 80's to early 90's. I remember those dunes on the California side of the river, below Parker Dam, right? The fam and I will be in Phoenix in early November and we are taking all dirt from Wickenberg to Havasu to visit friends.
I hope your stock drivelines keep quiet. Mine started growling after a few hundred miles, even with new u-joints. I ended up having to point the pinions up and go with DC shafts.
I will say be careful when you are wheeling with the sway bars on. They front bracket on the axle can shear and take the hard brake line with it. I pulled mine and have left them off. With the Slee springs, I think the spring rate is enough with my shocks also being heavily valved on the rebound side.

Ha, yeah, you'd appreciate it. It's really clean.
I am using a maxrad 5' mag mount for now.
I became a tech plus- Ham at like 12 years old... you should get your licence... my dad is trying to talk me into a large adjustable military spring base antenna. He's got one on his dodge. He likes because he can stack it way tall..20ft or so.

Thanks! My 80 has a large stock tranny cooler. That ford unit is stricktly for my PS.
You are thinking of the dunes of Echo Lodge. These dunes are in osborne wash right off of the Parker 425 race course. The race track runs along the bottom of these dunes. Up the wash is the famous "jeep trail", down the wash is badnochs river bar.
I am having no trouble yet with the DS. I am keeping an eye on it though. The driveshaft angles dont look too bad to me really. DC shaft is in the plans though. The Parker Strip is my favorite/ most beautiful spot along the Colorado. It is Home to me.
yes and yes.
I'm gonna build a crossmember like the redneck skid plate build post. It will be a driverside link arrangement from a tower on the crossmember to top of the housing. 1/2 wall DOM upper link. Ballistic joint and cast bushing with shank. It all cost $$$ though. Im collecting metal as of this post. Panhards will just get sleeved.
I just had another one of these, so i'm on mr. mom duty temporarily...
