I have an engine I am going to put in from a 87 fj60 it has the ac compressor still attatched to it. Can I use that for OBA? I do have a york compressor that I bought but never got the bracket. Should I get the bracket for the york or would the nipon one work?

In an airconditioning system, the oil lost by the compressor by being pumped into the discharge line gets replaced by oil returning to the compressor via the suction line. In this way, adequate oil level is maintained and the compressor doesn't seize up (or incur excessive wear) from lack of lubrication.

So what I'm saying is - Airconditioning compressors are not made to deliver oil-free air. (Unlike proper air compressors.)

Now this feature (of pumping out oil) is undesirable when a compressor is being used to pump up tyres. And some designs/types of airconditioning compressors pump far more oil than others.

As I understand it, your York compressor has a proper "sump" to hold its oil and is therefore less prone to "pumping it out rapidly" - And this makes it far better suited to the "onboard air application" than your typical A/C compressor (swash-plate design).

PS. Having said this, a compressor used for onboard air gets only intermittent use, so even a "swash-plate type" will still last quite some time before it wears out from inadequate lubrication.

You are correct about the oiling problem, however there is an easy fix for the York oil pumping (don't know about other types of AC compressors). At the very top line of this screen you will find "Tech Links". Click on it and in the new screen scroll down until you see "Vehicle Toys" in the left hand column. In that section go down about 5 lines to "Charlie Glabe (curing York compressor blow-by)". This tech article will show you how to mod your York to keep the oil in the sump. It is very EASY, I recently did this to my York that I got for onboard air.

I read that write up also. thats why I bought the york, and I will just get a bracket for it and mount that. Just curious if other's have used the oem compressor with any luck.

I think the FJ60 compressor needs the lubricating properties of the gas to keep it from seizing, so if you are putting air through it (no lubricating properties) it'll seize. I think. I would go with the York personally given your choices.
 
Some people install an inline Lubricator for AC compressors w/out an oil reserve.

That's even more reason why the York is "the better way to go" for onboard air!
