I've been fixing all the broken junk (thanks to the PO) on my basically stock 85' 60 for awhile and I'm finally ready to start looking at the more fun parts. This is a third vehicle (not a DD) that will probably spend more time driving to Home Depot than off road, but I still want it be a decent rig.

I've read about 3,000 Mud posts on suspension, tires, and wheels, and I'm planning to go with the 2.5" OME lift with 33/12.50 BFG MudTerrain T/A KM2 tires on 15x8 97 series rockcrawlers (3.75 BS), but I have a few questions.

(1) I live in PA and we don't get a lot of snow, but we get some and roads do get icy. Are Mud Terrains a horrible idea? Are they okay if they're siped? Is the TrXus a good alternative?

(2) I don't want to trim sheet metal (yet) and is sounds like 33/12.50s will fit fine with the OME suspension without rubbing at full flex. Can I squeeze in 34's (TrXus?) with a small (1-2") body lift and OME or would I also need shackles and or trimming?

(3) Any other tips, comments or derogatory remarks about something I overlooked are welcome. Yes I know I might have to regear, but I have 31's right now and it's okay, so I'll just drive the 33's for awhile and see if I think it's necessary.

Thanks

if they are siped you will be ok never had a problem up in indiana.

yes the 33-12.50x15 will fit just fine and at full flex you may have some very slight rubbing but nothing to worry about its not gonna cut up your tires or rip your fenders.

you will notice the change in bigger tires re-gear is not necessiary tho some 4.11's out of a 62 would not be a bad idea they can be had pretty cheap and will make a noticle diferance.

post some pics of the new suspension and tires.

ive seen the new km2's in some magazines but never in person yet i really like the looks and would buy some but i want bias ply for the rocks. a buddy of mine is gonna be putting them on his toyota pickup here soon only in a 35" configuration.

Yeah...they KM2s havn't been out long enough for any good ice/snow feedback. The truxus have plenty of siping and I loved the set I had on my rover. I tore the to peices wheeling and they still held air and drove great. (they take a few weights to balance though)

Just some food for thought...

I have Dick Cepek Mud Countries and they are great. The are an M/T that is sipped already, they ride really well, and are not terribly noisy. They are great in the mud as long as it is not clay. The tread wear isn't the best but I have a little less than 10k on mine and they don't look to bad. I've been told that I'll get about 35K out of them and that seems about right.

For occasional wheeling and more on-road time, why not the BFG A/Ts? great snow/ice traction and not too shabby off-road. my .02

I love my trxus, and the 34" size will fit with 2 or 3 inches of lift and an inch of body, thats what im running right now. Now that my springs have broken in, i need to drop my bumpstops in the front to keep my tires out of the fenders, and that is with a large portion of the front corner of the fender cut out.

The few times i had them in snow they worked very well, on or off road.

I just went through the same situation. I could not find the MT KM2 in anything smaller than 35s. That might of changed I don't know, but I did buy AT and really like them. Thanks

Agent Orange - It sounds like 34s won't fit without some fender trimming, but do you think 33/12.50 TrXus would fit with just a 2.5" OME lift with no trimming, no shackles, and no body lift.

I assume you have the TrXus MT radials, how is the wear, noise, and offroad performance? Would you recommend the TrXus MT over the BFG MT? I'd also love to see any pics of the tires installed on your truck.

Northwest - You're correct about the KM2s, I should have typed BFG Mud Terrain T/A KM instead of KM2.

I'm considering the All Terrains for the ice and snow considerations, but I'd rather have a mud terrain for the off road performance and aggressive tread. Yeah, call me a shallow poser, but I want my Land Bucket to look good

I would have a look at the Hercules Trail Digger and see if it strikes your fancy. Might be a good choice for an aggressive tire that is still pretty good on the street.

OME 2.5 is medium, right? Wouldnt you want the heavy which gets around 3in since most of the use will be for hauling stuff from HD?

I have the same set up you are considering, with the addition of anti flip shackles, 4.11's and front and rear lockers with an H55. I have Pit Bull Growler tires that are insane on the trails, but probably too agressive for daily driving. I always buy the BFG All Terrains for my 2001 Dodge 2500 4x4 Diesel. I drive a lot on the hwy and have to go "off-raod" quite a bit on job sites. They are great tires and you can get them in 10 ply if you want. I am not sure about the spacing issues, so make sure the wheels are correct. I get a slight rear tire rub under major flex when aired down.
Just my 2 cents

Have you considered the 255/85/16 (about 33.5x10.5) Trxus MT. I run the Trxus MT on my 4runner and great all around tire. Hooks up well on snow, rocks mud and can cruise at 75 no problem. I have always had bad luck with flats on the BFGs

I will never buy a bfg mt, there are no performance gains and the trxus are cheaper. I really cant say enough good things about them.

Here is a fresh pic from rauschs comp course.

X2 - you already said it wouldn't be getting a bunch of time offroad. Even for a posuer rig the BFG AT's look good - unlike most other AT treads - you get plenty of sidewall lug

It is a fabulous snow tire.

Agent Orange - Nice looking truck. Are those the TrXus MT or STS? They kindof look like the STS, but it's hard to tell in the pic.

I've owned both the BFG A/T's and M/T's and was more impressed by the M/T's in every aspect. I have TSL radial Super Swampers now and they are LOUD but capable in the dirt and the soft rubber works on snowy roads. Just ordered some Mickey Thompson MTZs, if this thread is still active when I run em I'll report back

They are the MTs, i wouldnt touch the STS.

That is a good distance for pics on my truck, much closer and the sheetmetal kinda looks like the ocean......

Damn trees :flipoff2:.

84yota4x4 - I looked up the Dick Cepek Mud Countries and they look pretty sweet. How would you compare them to the TrXus MT?

Anybody else out there have any other experience with the TrXus MT or Dick Cepek Mud Countries?

No matter what tire you buy, you had better start thinking about re-gearing if you are going to 34's. Your rig is going to be a lot weaker on highway inclines with 33's and 3.70 gears. 34's will be just a little more.
