I have been wanting to go back up to WCU for two reasons. First, to see my old college area and how it's grown since i graduated and secondly to see if all the rumors i've heard about the trail closures was true.

First off, it was bitter sweet to see some of the campus progress. Change is sometimes tuff, but for the most part it seems to be a positive change. My old house is now gone and there is a huge apartment complex there. Some of the old stores and coffee shops are gone and in their place are new, fancy structures. The drive through campus is closed, you now have to loop around campus. A lot of new classroom buildings are up as well.

Then we headed up caney fork to ride up moses creek all the way up to Old Bald. There was a big construction crew at the entrance of moses creek that were replacing the two bridges. Once we passed them, the gravel road up was smooth and the trail off of the gravel road was open! We were pumped. First thing i noticed is how smooth and graded the trail was. That was a big disappointment and just shows how stupid (in my opinion) their management program is. They smoothed it out so that anyone in a honda civic could drive up there and then they complained that the area was getting over-used... genius! Anyways, it was open all the way to the top and then we hit our first gate. So, the bald is closed. You can hike up to it but no driving on it. We came all the way back down and headed up caney fork to try to go up the other side. Gate, closed. The trail leading off to wet camp, gated and closed! So we came back down and headed up to try the short cut to sugar creek gap.... gated and closed.

We came back down and decided to head up 281 to sugar creek gap and camp at the clearing at the top. The gravel road was again, smooth and graded. When we got to the top there were signs and boulders saying it was illegal to go up on the cleared area and you could be fined. So we continued over and turned onto a trail... gate. Backed up and continued down the gravel road to the trail leading to ruff butt... gated and closed.

By this time i was really getting frustrated. We camped at the bottom of the gravel road in front of a gate for the evening. Two wildlife officers came to visit and we talked about the closures. They agreed that what had been done was overkill but said there is nothing they can do about it and they went on their way.

The next day we came back down to the store at caney fork to gas up and talked to a group of old - time locals. They were mad as hell about the closures and said that they have been complaining and writing letters for years and nothing has changed.

So, with that said, the rumors are true. It appears to be locked out for any vehicle use and it seems that will not change anytime soon. I urge you to write whatever politician you can and tell them this is not management of our resources.

Here is a little drone footage of old bald:

:( HC will likely go this route eventually, especially with the increased traffic we've been pumping in there the last few years.

Thanks for the info. I love the WCU campus, been there a couple of times with my kids to visit. Looks like my youngest will be heading there next year. My other two went elsewhere.

Sad to see the closures, but I think there will be more. We (not ONSC "we") as an "at-large offroading vehicle community" have a bad reputation with land managers. Unfortunately, is has been earned by many malingerers that destroy the environment and don't respect others. We do our part by cleaning up and working to maintain trails and turn that around, but it is a big political issue. Tread Lightly is a great organization that works on keeping access open, but they are struggling with the actions of many that still ignore the regs and just do what they want.

The old saying "a few bad apples ruin it for the whole bunch" is always the strongest case for the offloading community. I know in the past there was some abuse with people leaving trash on the trails and in a few areas getting off the trail system. It sucked but it did happen.

I still say it could be managed properly instead of locking us out. One thing is to open one of the loops for a season and close others, then rotate them out. Heck, i would even pay an access fee to use the area if the money was going towards proper management. Locking tax payers out is not management.

This place used to be an off-road mecca. It's still a beautiful area and if you are into hiking and mountain biking all these trails are open to that. So you can still find a nice place to camp and enjoy the area, you just can't wheel it like you used to.

Alex thanks for all of the intel on Mecca, and this is really sad. I am sooooo happy I got to go, I think it was my 1st or 2nd ONSC trip, way back in '06? Anyway, it was one to remember for many reasons - such an amazing area. Truly a shame for all of us.

I disagree with the "few bad apples" - there are a helluva lot of bad apples. Even if all public lands were closed, people would still b!tch and completely deny any involvement in contributing to closures. I understand we the people own public lands, but that does not mean we are free to destroy them or have unfettered access: we own city parks, does that mean we can s*** on the basketball courts? ramp on a drinking fountain? drink beer in the children's pool? I'd ask people to think long and hard before taking/making a bypass, having a beer on the trail, or endlessly struggling on an obstacle and tearing up the ground around it.

How about some TREAD Lightly refresh during our next ONSC gathering? I can get my hands on material to bring too.

......having a beer on the trail......
And definitely don't post pictures of this activity, regardless of it is was a driver or passenger, even if it's a perfectly legal thing to do in that particular area. People get the wrong impression when they see that even if it's a fancypants craft beer. Don't think that there aren't trolls looking around sites like this for propaganda pictures.

Wow. I sure do miss that place. I usually drive up Moses creek once a year just to check. Really sad. Was an epic camping spot at the upper bald between those two trees. I've said this in years past but I'd love to park and hike to the bald from the parkway and camp for the weekend on the bald

Marshall, i think that is what they are wanting. When we were up there a researcher was on the upper bald and walked down to talk to us. He was studying salamanders. He said that the forest service is trying to make the bald a place where people can park on the parkway and hike approximately 2 hours to get to. You can camp there with backpacking tents, you just can't drive up the trails anymore.

Gonna crank up an old thread here. I use To live about two miles from Caney Fork rd, and when I was an off road driving instructor for the Land Rover school at Biltmore, we use to take a trip or two up through Caney Fork to the lower and upper balds and back out Moses creek for training days, and of course my personal stuff. I distinctly remember the week that was closed up there. The final straw was when some local dip $h@& goons took a concrete saw and epoxied a granite plaque into on of the rocks on the upper bald to “commemorate deddy” (their words) and spread his ashes. They told the story how “deddy” hunted up there from his truck because he was disabled. I went off on them! I told Them this is the kind off stupid $h!t that causes gates to go up!! Needless to say that got tense. Guess what? Two weeks later we heard rumors they had dozers up there tank trapping and building a parking lot. We all know what forest service lots mean. A gate. And we were right. Yeah it’s prolly coincidence on the timing. But then again it coulda been the final straw. I’m just curious with some of the recent advocacy Upstate Cruisers has accomplished with opening gates to secret spots if that could be achieved at Caney Fork. Just a thought for this am

I really miss this place. Was the ultimate getaway for me where I was able to go on a real adventure! I still remember the first time me and some college buddies from WCU wandered up there in a K5 blazer and an old FJ40. We had no maps, no GPS, no cell phone, just pure adventure to see where we would end up. It really helped shape my love of 4wheeling and adventure.
