Last week I parked my 1983 JF60 in the garage to let it idle and warm up. After about 5 minutes I peeked my head out to see a huge and growing puddle of oil underneath and leaking like crazy. I quickly shut her off and had her towed to the shop. The found that a mystery plug had blown and spewed oil out straight into the fan which shot oil all over the engine bay. They told me they dont make the plug anymore and ended up driving another pug into the hole and used some type of sealant/adhesive to hold it in and told me that it would not happen again.

I have been reading up on the Oil Galley plug and looked for mine around the spark plugs from all the pics that are posted. I do not find one anywhere on my engine around the spark plugs and am wondering if on some models it was relocated to the front of the engine. This plug is about the size of a dime. Lucky I caught it quickly, but I am wondering now if I should get the hole threaded and fixed as described for the oil galley plug fix???

Anyone have any experience with the same problem???

Thanks....I have read a almost all of these but have not seen a plug in the front, only by the spark plugs. I cannot find a plug anywhere near a spark plug...only this one in the front of the block and it is much bigger...about the size of a dime.

The oil galley plug is above and to the right of #5 spark plug and points generally
at the firewall so whatever you have going on isn't the item commonly known as
the oil gallery plug. The hole you depict in the photo, judging by it's proximity to
BVSV#1 and BVSV #2 (the blue and purple sensors w/ 2 vacuum lines each)
looks like a head bolt hole and should have a bolt holding the head to the block there.

Call me crazy but it looks like a head bolt is missing.
And yeah that’s one HELL of a pool of oil. Sheet!

FYI, avoid that garage now. They are cluefxxxingless. Im sorry man, it’ll get better. You might be in for some big work. If your not well versed in mechanics, you will be soon.

Maybe simply an air rail hole?

I don't think so...air rail holes are at a 45º angle and are closer to the valve cover.

I went outside and looked at mine (87 fj60) and just can't tell what that hole is...
It honestly doesn't look like it aligns with the rest of the head bolts either, perspective-wise.

Your right, air rail holes are on an angle. There’s a funky ridge along the horizontal surface too that I can’t grasp. I’d go look at my own truck but I’m trapped under a sick needy child.

I found my air galley plug!!!!...the engine was rebuilt a while back and painted black. You have to run your finger over the place where the plug is to know it is there. Perhaps something I need to get done at a place that is experienced with FJ engines before it blows. Still not sure what the plug that blew was....maybe he said they plugged it with a freeze plug? Obviously i am not a mechanic.

Yeah I understand that but the ‘bolt’ that’s hard to distinguish in my circle ought to be a headbolt too.
I grabbed a couple pix when I ran outside for my stethoscope... (my kid sounds like crap!)
Pic I’m adding is a very obvious headbolt.

went out and looked again and it does appear there is a bold missing. Looks like it holds a bracket in place. Will have to see about getting that replaced. Good eye. I noticed blue vacuum line and noticed the same thing on a used rig I was looking at before I bought this one. I often get surges when the engine is not cold and thought maybe it was vacuum issue. Did you just go and replace all your vacuum lines with good quality lines and is there a kit you can buy to do that??

Is that hole your questioning on a horizontal or vertical surface. It’s really hard to see in your photo.

I bought hose from summit. You’d need two sizes, I used 3mm and 6mm. It comes in pkgs of 10’ each. You’ll need about 25’ if the 3 and possibly one bag of 6. But read up before going by me as I’m desmoged and most likely have far less footage than you do.

This is where your leak was. It is a press fit plug on the pre 85 2Fs, like your engine. In 85 they made it a threaded plug. See pictures below. The plug they installed is sitting quite a bit raised from the block surface.

I had to wonder if it was something like that.... on my vertical surface I have what might have been a plug prior to my year (‘87). Now it’s just a casting mark.

This was what I saw on mine that I had to wonder if it was what he was referring to.
So now he’s gonna need to get it plugged somehow right?
