i just got an oil filter from cruiser corps. i had an order for them so i figured i would get e new filter too. it is a lot smaller than the one i have got in the past from toyota. it is still a toyota filter but it appears about half the size.

did they send me the wrong one, is there two size of filters? if i use it do i need to be concerned at all?

thanks
andy

What engine do you have? What year?

I think I heard the large filter is discontinued, but why don't you call them and ask them?

Pretty sure Toyota still stocks the large filter.

Per the Toyota parts desk, they discontinued the large filter. Only the smaller one is available now. But K&N still makes a big one.

K&N, Fram, Napa, Wix still carry the large body filters. In my opinion, the construction of the filter you have, D3? Is superior to those I previously listed, either way, your really splitting hairs, at this point. Use a quality oil, don't use cheap Fram filters, and you'll be good to go.

Fram PH8 I believe is the large size.........

sounds good. thanks for the responses and information. it is toyota, so i will keep and use it with confidence.

I am going to get the smaller on the next oil change. I've been using a large "gold" purlator from advance for awhile. It is a very good filter but I have zero maneuvering room in there. Wondering if you've noticed a good deal more working room in the surrounding areas (specifically dizzy diaphragm) with it installed? I have a 78 also with the large cap dizzy.

I recently ran out of the large Toyota filters and have switched to the large Wix/Napa gold (1515). I don't know if it really makes a difference having a larger filter but it makes me feel like I'm treating my motors better for some reason...mad Land Cruiser obsession possibly.

Here are some good options on filters:

Wix - 51515 (the filter I use on my DD)
Wix - 51773 (Jim C. has mentioned this filter before)
Wix - 51459

Baldwin - B7311-MPG

Oil Filters, like the oil you use, is all about owners confidence in it and being responsible to change both at the necessary intervals.

For more $.02 worth; I would never use the "ORANGE" filter!

Ive heard the Toyota filters have some valve inside to help circulate oil with cold start ups. Any truth to this? Do any other brands do this as well? Im also in the market for a new filter and have been trying to figure out if the shorter one aval from Toyota is still better than whats out there or the napa replacement large size.

Like most filters, Toyota filters have 2 "valves" one is the anti drain back valve, and a pressure relief valve; incase too much differential pressure is accross the filter media. Some companies have both the drain back valve and relief valve located at the same end of the filter case, Toyota does not. Toyota's anti drain back valve as well as the filter gasket are both made of silicone, and the anti drain back valve also features an O-ring sealing surface. Silicone offers better cold weather properties then the nitrile used in the filters listed above. Although we would never experience the temp ranges that would exceed the properties of either material.
Here is a link to the filter I tore into this past winter, I also have on the shelf a Napa 1515 filter that I could post pictures of as well, if your interested.

Ever wondered what was inside specific oil filters? Interesting photo below:

Not surprising that oil filter threads are about as heated as oil type - and tire type - threads. I use a K&N mainly because the parts store was open and that's all they had that fit. Before that I used a small Toyota because I just happened to be at the dealer spend bazillions on OEM restoration parts. But they both cost more so I'll be more prepared next time and buy a just-as-good but cheaper filter. I can't help thinking that not using the absolutely best filter is going to do anything to my 43-year-old engine, which probably was lubricated with molasses at some point in it's life. Like we say, it's an F engine - they're too stupid to die. Change the oil and filter at regular intervals and worry more about rear main seals and freeze plugs blowing out. Just my $0.02.

WIX 51515.......pretty much(besides some OEM big filters here and there) I have used in 20 years in all my Cruisers(besides the 100's and LV)

I have had close to 20 Cruisers, 10+ other rigs....never(knock on wood) have I ever had to take the heads off any of them, change at 3500-ish miles(or once a year on stuff I hardly drive) just good dino oil(and now zink additive) on the F series motors)

if I understand correctly the old(like my 64) F motors don't send the oil thru the filter all the time. I still use the old school element filters on my 65 F motor......they cost $5, think they still use them on some of the Toyota Forklifts
