Today I decided to make my annual sacrifice to the Land Cruiser gods, this entailed the destruction of the aforementioned oil filter. This would be the filter spec from everything to a '75 FJ40 all the way up to the '97 FZJ80. Brought to you by your local Toyota parts supplier.

Here you can see the placement of the usual parts associated with most modern oil filters. Some of which can be debated, such as the placement of the bypass valve; located at the bottom of the filter. As you can see, the back up "leaf" spring is a bit deteriorated, this is from me removing the assembly.

That filter is tiny compared to the Wix 51515 on my '97.

The filter media appeared to be of good quality; all seems were glued, including a heavy bead of glue at both ends of the filter. This particular filter also relies on that bead of glue to seal the bottom portion of the filter, as it's being pushed up by the spring. 45 pleats.

Here you can see where the seems of the filter media are glued together.

Here you can see the cross sectional of the bead of glue located at both ends of the filter.

Having nothing to compare this filter too, I would say all in all the filter media is pretty well constructed. I would have liked to seen the bypass valve on the same side as the anti-flow back valve, sealed end cap with a coil spring back up. The leaf spring back up seemed a little too flimsy, in my opinion.

Thanks for the writeup (and sacrifice). I use these on my wife's sc430 with a 3uz-fe v8 in it but I still use the wix 51515 on mine.

What you're looking at is a superior filter ass'y compared to many other "popular" brands. IMHO.
