I have pounded a screwdriver through the top of the filter and used that to loosen it.

I used to do this until I got one of the sprung kind that slips over the end of the filter. It uses a rachet and tightens on the filter when loosening the filter.

Looks like this

Yeah, I'd give my kingdom for one of those right now. Day 2...

This is what I have been using for quite awhile. Works great!
1/2" ratchet
1/2" to 3/8" adapter
12" - 3/8" extension
3/8" universal
6" - 3/8" extension
Metal oil filter adapter: Vector p/n 17050

^ Yep, that's the same style adapter I use and was describing in my post. Never had an issue removing the oil filter since, especially if it was only hand tightened in the first place.

cheers,
george.

I had a similar issue getting my filter off at my last change. I ended up putting a sheet of news paper over the end of the filter and then putting on the "end cap" style filter tool (similar to the one pictured above). The paper gave me a grip that I couldn't previously get. slow steady torque and it should come off.

PS: it helps when you cuss.

I hate this thing, too. I have loosened the power steering reservoir and moved it over a bit on occasion to get better leverage.
Mine is permanently left bent forward 1/2" for just that reason.

To the OP, get a longish screwdriver & stab through to twist loose, pretty much my last ditch move when a filter is bent & the conventional tools aren't going to work at that point.

I ended up resorting to the screw driver through the filter method. It still took about a 1/2 a turn of the filter to get it to break free. I think I'll have a small child "hand tighten" it this time. Thanks for all of the input.

...just use your thumb and pinky next time and your left hand (if you are a righty) :)

cheers,
george.

Most filters used to say-1/2-3/4 turn after making contact with base to tighten. -many many hundreds this has worked for me-problem is when someone else installed it-same with drain plugs but that's another story. Stay away from quick lubes. . Many times on stuck filters I hold heavy pressure on the wrench for a minute or so and it will slowly start turning on it's own. I prefer these wrenchs for 90% including on these . Any destructive removal as a very last resort

Today I struggled with e filter. Removed the right front tire. From under the hood attached a chain wrench and got it broke. Then a filter wrench and hand turn got it the rest of the way off. The chain wrench is also good for removing front shocks.

It's messy but you can also hammer a big screw driver through an oil filter and break it loose with the screw driver.

Another way to remove a stuck oil filter (sometimes) is to approach the filter from below, on your back, reach up and monkey grip the filter from the front side like you're hanging from a tree branch, start with your palm near the top of the filter, then using your body weight pull down. Filter (and your hand) should be squeaky clean before you start, helps the hand stick to the filter surface. FWIW

Edit: mudgudgeon beat me to it
