I went to my local yota dealer today to get a new oil filter and they gave me what was called for in their computer. It was a bit more money then I paid last time so before I left I looked under the hood to find a smaller filter. I got the last one from a different dealer and he was sure it was the right one. I have had this one on there for the last 5000 mi. it is something like a yzzd3 and is kinda small. The one the dealership just sold me was bigger, more expensive and had different PN. I went back and said it was the wrong one and picked up the one off the shelf that is the same as what I have on there now. So my questions are; have I hurt the engine by putting the small one on for the last 5000 miles, should I go back and get the bigger one or is the the smaller one OK?
Thanks for the help,
Paul

The big one (15600-41010) is the original type filter but it has been superceded by the smaller 90915-YZZD3 filter. You can use either (the bigger one requires a bit more oil at each change). If it helps, the D3 is what Toyota uses on most of their V8s and the bigger V6s (4.0s in the FJ/Tacoma)

Edit: if you search, you will also find that there is a filter only available from Japan that some folks like to use too

I just bought a couple of the 90915-20004 (Japan Denso) filters from Dan.

First time i've used them on my 80 since I bought it 2 years ago.

I don't know why, but now my start up rattle has disappeared completely.

I was using the D3 but I'm definitely sticking with these 20004's.

I like to use the bigger one. Though I get mine from Napa.

Using the Fram or standard part numbers, the guys in the mid-80's pickup world, (toyota of course), would use I believe the 1A or PH8A instead of the PH3614 for size reasons.

The 8A is a huge filter, one of the biggest comparing to the other boxes; bigger filter, more crap it can collect...

And if you're wondering the PH3614 used in the pickups is the same as the FJ80's.

the 80 would do just fine with a Q-tip as an oil filter. the small filter works just fine.

Just to add to the confusion, the filter used on older Ford engines (300 I6, 5.8/351, 7.4/460, etc.) can be used on our trucks. Same filter.

:hillbilly:

thanks all,
I think i will just stick with what i got then. It sounds like it should work just fine.
thanks for the input,
Paul

clarification please

A little confused myself.
I have a few 15600-41010 filters on hand for my '78 40. I also have a couple 90915-20004 filters on hand from CDan for the 80. The sealing O-ring diameter sizes are quite different, yet it is posted here that the 15600-41010 can be used on the 80. When I changed my filter the other day (for the first time) I did not pay attention to the mounting surface, but is it really big enough to seal the -41010 filter? TIA for any clarification for this 80 newbie.

Yep
I was told by Cdan if I wanted I could put one of the big old filters on my 05 Scion tC if the frame/ other parts weren't in the way ;)

You can stick a big filter on a Tundra/Sequoia, but the skidplate will get in the way.

But the 1FZ makes almost no crap, so...

the 80 would do just fine with a Q-tip as an oil filter. the small filter works just fine.

Exactly, the small filter also comes up to pressure on cold starts quicker, that's when most wear happens, probably why Toyota superseded to the small filter.

I'll bet you I could stick a 15600-41010 on my 4 cyl Camry. Fits my 22re no problem. Didn't fit my 3RZ due to interference from the engine.

Can't recall

How many seconds does it take to see the oil-pressure
marker move with your set up?

The Ford filter is a FL1A which i've always used in both of my fzj80's with no issues. Yes it will hold more oil but the filter element is also larger. More filter area less crap in oil.

This is what I've gleaned from another site, quite possibly from this board as youz guyz are my main source for info

Of course always confirm any info before you commit ;)

I just picked up a 90915-yzzd3 from my local dealer and it came with a paper/fiber filter about the size and thickness of a nickel, with a 1/2" hole in it. I've never had to put a gasket like this in with any of my other filters, what gives? Is this replacement filter different than the 90915-20004 in some way?

Nevermind, I'm an idiot. It's for the drain plug. That was nice of them:)
