1995 FZJ80, 144k miles. I've done a lot of searching and decided I still needed to post.

This is the first oil change that I have ever done on this vehicle since I have owned it. I have changed the oil and let the vehicle warm up fully and then let it sit for a few minutes, and I'm still only halfway up the dipstick.

Materials used:
Motorcraft FL-1A oil filter (huge)
2 Gallons of Rotella T5 15W40
1 pint Schaeffer Moly EP
1/4 quart of Mobil 1 0W20 (what I had laying around)

That is a total of ~8.75 quarts that are in the engine right now, and still only halfway up the dipstick.

I have some more Mobil 1 0W20 I could add to get it all the way full, but the listed capacity with oil filter change on the motor is 7.8 quarts, and I'm already a quart over that.

Anyone else ever had this issue? I'm just a bit gunshy as I don't want to overfill.

Thanks!

The markings on the dipstick are nearer to the tip than the middle, if I remember correctly.

If you mean you are in the middle of the High/Low indicator on the dipstick; then you are good.

8.75qts is slightly too much (again, on memory).

Check you owners manual.

It is certainly possible that you don't have the proper OEM dipstick. Post a picture of the lower portion and overall measurements so others can compare.

Exactly halfway up the hash marks on the dipstick. 8.75 is a lot, which is why I was scared to add any more.

I use the FL-1A filter too; it has a very large volume and is well built.

I will post a photo of it tomorrow, I'm stuck at work all night.

How many quarts do you typically use? I noticed that it was MUCH larger than the filter that was already installed on the truck. This would have been an oil change that my mother had done about 6 months ago before this truck was passed on to me.

Typically these trucks take 7.5 quarts plus the filter.
The small filters are about 1 pint.
The larger filters are about 1 Qt.

If you checked the oil BEFORE you started it and ran it, it should read about 1 Qt OVER full on the dipstick because the oil filter has not filled completely yet.

I typically pour in 8 quarts and use the small Toyota filter and it comes out about 1/16" above the "full" mark on the dipstick AFTER it has been started and run, warmed up, then shut off and sit for at least 20 minutes before checking it again. (on a LEVEL surface)

This is interesting as I did check it before starting it to ensure there was enough oil and I could warm it up. It read right under the F. I let it warm up, shut it off, waited 3 minutes and it wasn't even touching the dipstick. I then added 1/4 quarter of 15W40 (all I had left) and repeated this process. At this point it was at the bottom end of the dipstick. I then added the 1/4 quart of Mobil 1 0W20 and that got it to halfway up the hashmarks between L and F. At this point I did the math and figured there was 8.75 quarts in there and I needed to ask around before dumping any more oil in there.

It sounds like this is normal, but I need to take a picture of my dipstick and put it on here to ensure I have the right one. I highly doubt my mother would have ever had it changed it or swapped, and she surely didn't do it.

3 minutes in between running and shutting down to check and the engine NOT at full operating temp plus using 15W40, a LOT of the oil is sticking to the sidewalls inside the engine.

Don't be quite so impatient.

Park it in a nice flat, level spot and go to bed. In the morning, check it before you cranks and this will tell you EXACTLY where it is.

Check it cold and sitting overnight is best.

I've been using the MotorCraft FL1A on my Cruiser for the last 15 yrs. or so. Drain the pain well, install new filter, add 8 qts. (regardless of where it falls on your dipstick) and you should be good to go. Check after the first 500 miles.

These engines don't care if you are a little over or under capacity.

Ok, well using this methodology it is still halfway up the hash marks on the dipstick.

With what everyone else is saying about 8 quarts, I'm just going to leave it alone as it is.

For the 1FZFE engine, 8.75 quarts is about 1 quart too much. Owners manual says 7.8 US quarts for a drain and fill with new filter. Something isn't right.

Your correct that 7.8 QT's is the correct amount of oil for an oil, and filter change with the short factory filter, but i think the difference here many lie in the fact that he's using a larger then factory FL1A replacement filter. I just changed my oil, and filter last week, I'm using a larger than factory Bosch D3500 filter, and upon filter, and oil change, (8QT's added) my dip stick was only reading about half way between the low and full marks. So i could easily add another 1/2 QT or so if i wanted to bring my oil level up to the full mark on my dip stick.

You guys can argue all day over the capacity of the oil filter, where the line should be on the stick, etc., and this will still be irrelevant to the overall life and proper lubrication of the engine.

The sump holds 8 quarts of oil, is well baffled inside and the oil pickup sits almost at the very bottom of the sump.
You could be 4 quarts low and this engine wouldn't care.

If you're anywhere on the dipstick, move on with your life.

Motor oil should be checked with a cold non-running engine. Before the first start of the day is usually ideal.

We never get all the oil out of the engine when changing the oil. So I always use the dipstick to gauge when it is full and take my time.

It has sat without running for 2 days now, and sits slightly above the F mark.

I'm just going to leave it as is. Lessons learned.

Thanks for the help gentlemen.

Dipstick after sitting 2 days. Should I drain some oil?
