I had my FF axle apart for a locker install the other week and was a little dissapointed to find the axle shafts the same size diameter as my 81 toyota crawler. i knew the front was the same due to me having a high pinion in the mini, but i assumed the rear was bigger. I know toyota rears are inherently strong and its rare to hear of one breaking, but it doesnt inspire confidence knowing im wheeling this big heavy pig on these "smallish" axle shafts. the ring gear is within a 1/4" of a D60 so no worries there, i was just hoping for more axle shaft beef.
I busted both rears on an SF axle, a side bearing at the rear diff, and bent relay rod and drag link. Surprisingly, the rear aussie locker has held up well even after to shafts being broken.
One thing to remember is the FF do not have to deal with the weight of the vehicle , nor does the a axel wrap up like on leaf sprung vehicles. All this cuts down on added forces that cause breakage. Fyi, a D60 shaft slide on to the side gear just fine, except that the angle of the spline is a little off. The shafts are the same as a standard D60.

Yes, I was recording that and the synthetic rope did indeed snap just a bit further up the trail. Luckily we had three trucks with winches. The holes on that trail are huge.
Blew my first birf during the third outing on 37's and I'm fairly easy on the skinny. I think it went when I had to back up a steep hill to avoid a bad situation. Replaced with stock for now (thanks Delancy) but I'm seriously considering Long's.
