Hey guys I'm a broke college student with a stock 1997 lx450 who's interested in overland. I've already done the Outer Banks and Uwharrie but am limited by my ground clearance and lack of a good roofrack for storage. I removed the running boards and mud flaps, relocated the spare tire, and unbolted the hitch which helped with the clearance.
I've got a nice list of stuff I'd like to do (sliders, skid plates, 3 or 4"OME lift, rooftop tent, etc etc) but everything is $900 and up. So if anyone has any old beat up 80 series gear they'd like to sell I'm all ears. Thanks in advance!

Any experience with welding/metal work?
You could try and weld up some sliders/skid plates yourself.. Save some money there.

Actually I've been seriously considering that option lately. I just need to take a welding class and buy some stock steel. Then just borrow my buddy's welding gear and see what I can do. I'm sure I'll at least be able to fabricate some skid plates. My girlfriend and I have been looking at rooftop tents lately and decided to go halfsies on one, however before I can do that I need to get a nice fullsize cargo rack. Arb, smitty, and a few other vendors had nice full size racks for the 80 series that hold 600lbs for a little over $800. I'm currently on the hunt for a used one at the moment but have had no such luck.

You could do rhino rack load bars.
2 will work. 3 may be ideal

You don't need a roofrack. don't need a RTT. Don't need sliders.
Organize the cargo area and carry a strap, fire extinguisher, and a basic tool kit.
I'd buy some coil spacers (1-1.5")
Buy a $200 tent for the ground, like 99% of the camping public
and if you've done Uwharrie, then you're conquered WAY tougher terrain that any 'overland' trip will throw at you.
Take the money saved and get some great tires, and possible rear locker. Those two things and you'll be able to go 99% of the places you want/need, especially around here.
But then again, 'broke' and modifying a car don't go together. If you're broke, I'd recommend a Honda Civic.

Are you seriously going to ask your girlfriend to pay half for a tent to go on your truck? Seriously? Ballsy man...that's ballsy!

I'm selling the front brush guard that came with my '97 when I bought it in February. It has what looks like Hella Rallye 4000 lights on it, but there was no wiring harness included.
I see new similar brush guards starting as cheap as $300 and the Hella 4000's are about $100 new (not including harness).
I don't really want to piece it out and have no idea what a fair price range is for the whole package, any thoughts? $150?

Thanks for the input guys, it is much appreciated. I am a noob after all. And as far as the brush guard, I am definitely interested in the lights although I know you weren't too into the idea of parting it out. I know I don't necessarily need the roof rack, sliders, rtt etc but these are just things I would eventually like to get down the road. I'm really into off road and overland and so is my girl so we intend to do it for a long time. I may be relatively broke right now but that doesn't mean I will be in the future. And I'm never trading in my 80 for a damn civic!!!!!! Or anything else for that matter. I'll look into coil spacers for a little more clearance.

I showed her what a rooftop tent was and she thought it was awesome and offered to buy half of it. She's definitely a keeper haha!

Buy yourself a real nice ground tent, take the money that you will save and buy a nice set of tires first. Go out on some state roads in the mountains of NC and TN. Do it a few times, if you still want the RTT, get it then.

Love "W" blocks. We ran a 409 in a Jeep Commando for a season and it was a riot.
I will echo everything onemanarmy said... Forget the roof rack and RTT. Get some spacers. Throw your spare in the back and strap it down (ground clearance) and if you haven't already, pull off the sidesteps and brush guard. Make sure you have tow hooks and just go have fun. If you're in to overlanding, a stock 80 is more than enough. Stay off the "D" trails on Uwharrie unless you really don't care about your rocker panels and the ability to open your doors. A rear Aussie locker is about $300 and the best upgrade you can make. Save your cash for textbooks, tuition, and beer (not necessarily in that order).
