@mtweller To get this back on track, you'll love how easy the front brake locks up. Can't do a tail whip 'cause of the lines but a 360 endo spin is a no brainer. If only we had V- or disc-brakes in the 80's!

Man, I had a Mongoose in middle school and then upgraded to some GT BMX bike. I bought a Haro Sport after I turned 16 and got a job. I still have a GT but I have not ridden it recently.

I had a gt, an mcs magnum, and a schwinn predator. The predator was my thrash bike, and i beat the snot out of it. It was my favorite because of that. I rode halfpipe, some street//freestyle, and did a little bit of bmx racing. Was at the track near my house almost every day after school. Friend of mine 2 houses down had a 1/4 pipe in the driveway, and another friend in the neighborhood had a 24 ft wide x 16 high halfpipe in the backyard. THis was back when tailwhips and can-cans were the hot tricks to pull. Actually competed against the condor, matt hoffman in a local event in florida way back when. when i saw what he was capable of doing, that was the end of my competing LOLOL

Ive got an old 1993/94 gt rts3 full suspension mtn bike i bought new. rolled my 94 xcab 4x4 over about 2 months after i bought it, and could never get comfortable on the rts3. i purposely bought the smallest frame in the fleet, and saved a couple lbs of weight.

Entire Bike History, more or less. I had a paper route that was a good 10 miles long - everyday after school M-F - - we rode bikes from age of X till we got cars around Larned Kansas growing up

Then some bike that had a middle spring shock, that was awesome, but WAY before its time and really heavy
Takara BMX - Blue Frame with Yellow tires and accents - - did my paper route on this bike from like 10-12
Giant MTB - bought for college, got stolen
Bridgestone MTB - Hi end components - that got stolen
GT Avalanche - While in Army
Cannondale F500 - While in Army, became Wife's, now Son's Bike

I had this same bike circa 1979. I think it was a Huffy. I loved to jump that thing.

I should do the same, I was all into Dyno, Hutch, and Redline back in the day! Rad was THE movie!

I built and re-built bikes all through Junior High. I had a chrome GT that looked pretty cool, but it was not nearly as light as my Hutch. My dream bike was the Haro. I loved the movie "Rad" so much, I bought it on DVD 2 years ago and loaded it on every iPad, iPod, and iPhone that I own.

They cost me around $199 each and are damn stout. I had two 80 series rear axles, 1 80 series front axle and a huge A442 transmission all sitting on teh bottom shelf for about 3 years.


I'll do $75 each on them.

Thanks for the reply Jonathan. I rode a few bikes today at Performance and REI and wound up blowing the budget on a Scott Scale 960 (great deal on a '15 closeout), frame size XL. I used to ride BMX and freestyle bikes as a kid, and then some street cycling in high school, but am ashamed to say nothing since. Lot's to learn, but I rode about 8 miles today and finally remembered one form of individual exercise I actually enjoy. I'm going to warm up on the greenways and similar trails this spring / summer and will shoot for some single track stuff this fall, if not sooner.

If you are looking for easy singletrack, start with Crabtree county park in Cary. I always recommend this park for new riders. But be careful; it can get really busy on Saturday and Sunday with nice weather. More experienced riders like Crabtree for the fast flowy trails and you can really make the most of it by just riding faster. If this is too easy, across the Old Reedy Creek bridge is 286 on the left and the legendary Rocky Road on the right. Both of these are bandit trails. 286 is a 13 mile beast and it is very easy to get lost out there. Rocky Road is significantly shorter at 4.5 miles but is one of the toughest in the area. Another trail within walking distance of your house is Regency near Koka Booth. It is constantly changing and I haven't ridden it in years.
