As a person that has the exact same certifications that your friends have I feel it is my job with that piece of paper to instruct people how to use their equipment. I have 3 different winches on 3 different pieces of equipment. Engo, Warn, TS. They all have not let me down. I make sure it works prior to me needing it which was taught in the 101 class. You do a PMCS on your equipment before leaving the house like checking your oil level. The winch is the same way. One of the things we teach is not to rely on one piece of equipment and to be prepared for something to break like hours did. Then you bring your knowledge to the top and use other ways of extraction. Use a hi lift or something else. Superwinch has its pros and cons like all other winches out there on the market. Good thing about the Internet out there is you can see what others have done to make something better like your Engo winch like I have on my wifes truck. Now if I put it on the wife's truck I trust It to work because if not I will never hear the end of it. You can ask the folks that were at numerous workdays a few years back to see if my Warn winch got put thru some abuse pulling a Bobcat up RML in the ice. My TS ( tractor supply ) one on my trailer gets used about once a month and has never let me down. I am buying a Come Up winch for my 80 here in another month for my trip out West to play in Moab. Then think about the folks that need their winches the most. Military and Hotshots. What do they mostly use ? Warn. Do they have issues with them sometimes? Yes, but a bunch of time it comes down to education and PMCS on that equipment.
Bottom line as a I4WDTA person I feel the correct thing to do is tell you the pros and cons to all out there and help guide you to a decision. Kinda like Jeep and Toyota. They all most wheel Jeeps and I wheeled a Cruiser. Got to have open mind to be a good instructor. Not just pushing one brand. And that is one reason I do not work there anymore. I have an open mind and will not jam just one thing down your throat.
