Just wondering, in general terms, what percentage of 80's produced were locked vs. un-locked? I am sure it probably fluctuated from year to year between 91' and 97'. Seems like the majority for sale in my area recently are unlocked, or at least it is not disclosed in the for sale listing. Maybe people are holding on to their locked 80's longer...

Thanks,

Russell

The figure I have heard here repeatedly is 7%

This is from an earlier post of mine wile I was looking

https://forum.ih8mud.com/showthread.php?t=10732

"of the 34 leads in north GA and north Alabama on 96/97 TLC's and LX450's
5 with lockers
12 already sold or no response or otherwise unknown
17 without lockers"

Of the ones I got a confirmed yes/no on the lockers that was 22.7% (5 of 22)
Taken as a whole % of all leads w/ lockers was 14.7% (5 of 34)

Maybe I ran into more locked ones than normal, maybe something about the area here, with such a small sample pool it is hard to get accurate #'s. but that is real world experience of what a person shopping for an FZJ-80 found.

Remember, 100% of 80 series have a locking differential (center diff... 91-92 had a switch, 93-97 were automatic), so that confuses the issue when you are looking for a used LC. 93-97 is when the front/rear lockers were optional, they were not available in 91-92. Many people do not know what they are or if they have them, so it is rarely disclosed in any ads, you have to call them and tell them exactly what to look for.
The recent figures that have been thrown around, have been 7%-20% with fr/rr lockers.

CDan just mentioned in a thread a couple of days ago that only 7% were made with lockers. So finding a locked one for sale and worth buying is a treasure indeed

Firetruck 41...your right...I noticed when I was shopping around a lot of people would say the truck has a locking differential, which was correct, (a center locking differential) but it did not have locking fr/rr differentials. Thanks for the input guys. So from the research that was done typically less than 10%-20% of LC's/LX450's have locking differenials.

Thanks again,

Russell

I am definitely one of the victims of an unlocked 80....does ARB do group buys :-) ??? $1700 plus bucks for a front, a rear and a compressor is sooo much yet SO very necessary. THere is only so much the skinny pedal can do for you until you start breaking stuff and as for doing rocks w/ no lockers, I wont even start (can you sense the frustration?). Not going to sell this rig to get one that has E-locks, although temping, I love it too much and have put a great amount of time into it. Maybe I'll come out with my own brand of air lockers, or generic E-lock toyota rip offs j/k. That'd be nice, Anyway just me b*(&ing. Anyone feel like hooking up a college student with some lockers let me know...:)

That was my experience also called some that said they had lockers in the ad but when asked about the switch to the left of the steering wheel it was not there, even had one guy who insisted it had lockers when I got there and asked where is the switch " they lock automatically when you shift into low " it was a clean white 97 LC though

Had one that did not know they had lockers until I asked, the lady I bought from knew she had Lockers but did not know what they were for. She had never used them.

I personally looked at all 5 locked mentioned above and they did have them. those stats were from 10 days before I bought mine, I should add the one I bought and also a 97 LX450 that I would have bought if he had come down on the price that are not included in those stats, but I cannot remember how many unlocked I looked at in that 10 day time period to balance it out so cannot add those.

Just to clarify, weren't the 91-92 80s automatic when you shifted into low range (just like 93-97), but also had the CDL dash switch as standard equipment for a manually locked center diff in high range?
