Anyone know how many lbs the factory hitch is rated for? Don't have one but am considering one. SOR sells an aftermarket that's rated Class 2 -> 3500lbs tow, 350lbs tongue. SOR also sells the factory hitch, but doesn't list the capacity. Saw someplace the tow capacity of my 97 is 5000lbs....

Thanks,
tony

New search feature works great! I think Cdan has posted this numerous times in the past and i don't recall off the top of my head.

Thanks Brent. I searched and found lotsa links about towing more than the 5K spec and debates about suspension mods for towing, but nothing specific about the limits for the hitch itself. I did notice the "factory" hitch was made by Valley Industries, the only hitch they sell currently is a class III, guess that probably means the original hitch was also class III.

I always thought it was 7300 lbs.

The factory hitch platform is 5000 lbs max trailer and 500 lbs max tongue weight. It is a dead-weight hitch only, not recommended for a load-distributing hitch.

sactocruiser,

Please TRY when you do a search.
Search: Key Word(s): OEM, hitch, rating ; Forum: 80-Series Tech and child forums

3 threads returned; the first is your post so you don't need to bother reading that one.

The draw bar for my boat is a 3 inch drop. It happens to be the same one I use for my Dodge truck. I do not know the rating. The Valley tube was a class IV. I imagine it is just as good as the OEM hitch as all of the mounting points are the same. That would make it class III or 5,000 lbs.

The weight rating of hitch carriers is derived from the dead-weight capacity of the hitch platform on the vehicle. In the case of the OEM 80 series hitch and most of the aftermarket 80 series platforms it is 500 lbs.

Both of the above replies are from C-Dan and with the above information you can clearly see that the OEM hitch is rated Class III, 5,000 lbs, and has a tongue weight limit of 500 lbs. The new search function even HIGHLIGHTS the search words in RED to enable you to quickly find posts with the key words.

Satco - yep - Valley is what's on the back of my beast. Easy to install.

Search: Key Word(s): OEM, hitch, rating ; Posts Made By: cruiserdan ; Forum: 80-Series Tech and child forums

This new SEARCH function is wonderful. When the above criteria is used you will have extactly 2 posts returned in less than 1/2 second. Both posts are precisely the information desired and the search words are highlighted as mentioned before. Turn on the "Posts" option instead of "Threads" option if you want to.

Thanks everyone as always.

B- thanks, I really did try(twice), and I saw that message. I just scanned it where he was writing about his truck tow capacity. My bad. (But Grendel still shoulda won.)

Tony,
Are you trying to be the second guy to land in the new forum kill filter? :D

BTW, that feature is BETTER than the new search function.
