OEM E-Lockers vs. Harrop

What is the current go-to place to order and/or have the Harrops installed? Are they called Harrop? Or Eaton? I see both brands being thrown around so I want to make sure we are talking about the same product.

Ideally I’d like to just remove my third members and ship them out to an experienced shop to install these lockers and then throw them on the car myself.

The Harrop e locker is made by Eaton.

I would contact Georg @orangefj45 at Valley Hybrids or Kurt @cruiseroutfit at Cruiser Outfitters. They are both great vendors who offer 3rd member setup with Harrop e-lockers.

We can certainly help!

For about twenty years Eaton only offered lockers for domestic applications and Harrop ( using Eaton “blanks” ) offered lockers for the imports.
Eaton started offering their e-lockers for Toyotas 2 years ago. We’ve sold and installed lots of them …….. and we have yet to send out a replacement under warranty. Bottom line is that they’ve been MUCH MORE RELIABLE than the ARBs.
We keep lots of lockers, rebuild kits and ring & pinion sets in stock. We can certainly build your Diffs and supply all the parts necessary for the job at hand.

Happy to help!

Awesome. Thanks for replying. I’ll email you guys shortly!

sounds like almost universal praise for the Harrop Eaton lockers. has anyone experienced what this video is presenting?

I started a thread concerning this issue several months ago. Unlocking every time we change directions is a recipe for disappointment. Locked means locked…..

link to thread?
Nothing was decided in that thread. Everyone has their own opinions and these days those opinions are based more on loyalty to the seller of the product rather than actual performance. The video you posted was presented honestly. Let me see about providing you a link.

Let’s take a step back.

Have you ever owned or wheeled a rig with the Eaton/Harrop lockers?
If so, then did you actually experience an “issue” due to the locker disengaging when changing direction?

I underestimated the speed with which you made it here.

FWIW, we have been importing and selling the Eaton/Harrop lockers for roughly seven years now. We installed them in 3 of our personal vehicles before selling them to the public or installing them here at our shop.
To date, we have sold and/or installed well over 1000 of them here.
Bottom line?
We have NEVER ( as in NEVER EVER ) had to send out a replacement locker because of a failure or malfunction. NEVER.
Let’s see who can say that about ARB lockers these days. And before anybody gets their panties in a bunch; we sell and install plenty of ARB lockers as well. So my “input” is not hear-say or biased. We sell and install both brands. And I prefer the Eaton/Harrop lockers.

so the way you worded things...

I understand ARB is less reliable. air lines fail.

I get that the disengaging isn't a malfunction, it's a feature.

my query was, is it problematic for performance? and is what was presented in the video, realistic?

The other benefit of a non-locked 80 is that by the averages, they probably haven't been wheeled as hard and are therefore in better condition in a lot of expensive non-apparent places. Tranny, Transfer, driveline, axles, etc.

I’ve been running the same ARB’s for more than a decade so, no, I’ve never run an Eaton but I saw that video and others showing the same difficulties. The design just doesn’t make sense. If coming unlocked every time we switch directions means gain then why does no one else’s diff locker do that?

I have had the Harrop/Eatons in my 80 since 2018 or so. It was full bodied until 2020. Since then I have converted it to a buggy. I have never ever had them unlock when I change directions. They lock and stay lock. I am running 40" Stickies.
