Hi all
Trying to source an OE coil for my 78 (Oz market) FJ40

Factory PN 90919-02004 (NLA)
Substituted into 90919-02015 (Also NLA)

Does anyone know a source for the 90919-02015, or indeed have a substitute PN for it?

Many thanks

The above coil appears to be a generic chicomm part from Vatozone, which can be had for $10 from Rockauto.
Interestingly, they also show an NGK coil for $24. NGK is good stuff, equivalent quality to ND but in a different keiretsu.

More research has unearthed the following coil - PN 90919-02113 (12v internal resistor).

This is marketed as suiting 1980-1990 FJ60, which uses an external igniter module, etc.

Is there any reason it wouldn't function fine as a coil for my non-igniter, points-only 1978 Aus market 2F? My understanding is the original PN for my car (90919-02015) was 12v/internal resistor, so it should function fine?

Any help much appreciated.

From research I’ve done there are really only 3 things to consider with coils: quality, ammount of power the coil puts out, and if it’s internally resisted or not. So being a OEM Toyota coil I would say you should be perfectly fine with that coil unless someone smarter than me says otherwise.

This was pretty well my thinking. If it’s 12v/internal resistor I should be fine.

From my research the igniter module is really only needed if the dizzy calls for it - mine does not.

The coil for 81-later ignitor setup is a higher power (lower resistance) coil, but the ignitor uses variable dwell to keep from overheating the coil.

It will work on a non-ballasted points ignition, but the point life will be reduced and the coil will run hotter than normal.

Great info thanks. So much like my original coil the 81+ is an internal resistor coil, but lower resistance.

Should be totally safe if I run a ballast then?

It's not an internal resistor coil. Internally resisted coils pack the ballast inside the coil and have 3 terminals.

Yes, if the goal is to stay OEM toyota, consider using your local market 80-later coil & ballast resistor. Not having the ballast bypass circuit could mean difficult starting when it is below freezing, but that's probably not too common there? Worst case, upgrade to a starter with ballast bypass termainal or add a bypass relay.

Jim, could you help me understand this a bit better?

I am planning to run the 'Non-US' Toyota distributor (19100-61080) which is a points based unit and the OEM Toyota coil mentioned above (90919-02113).

I think I am tracking where you mention that while this is a a 12v coil and works with the later non ballast resistor setup in the 60 series, it's b/c the 60 series igniter has a variable dwell which keeps the coil from overheating. My points based system doesn't have this same functionality so I will need to run a ballast resistor (takes the place of the 60 series igniter's variable dwell)?

In short...if I buy this (Vendor - FJ40/45 FJ60 FJ62 NOS OEM Coil Resistor) or something similar and wire it in with my non-US dizzy (19100-61080) and 12v coil (90919-02113) then I'll be good to go?

Many thanks!!

Jon,
What kind of vehicle? Is vehicle equipped with ballast circuitry?

'67 FJ40 with f135. Redoing from scratch but if I am correct it did not include ballast resistor circuitry in stock form.

I was hoping that wiring in a ballast resistor was trivial...but maybe not!

Why use a ballast resistor?
Just use a coil for non-ballasted application & be done.

Well...sometimes I don't always take the easy route. Already having the new oem 90919-02113 coil was / is the only reason to make it work. Sounds like finding an alternative coil is the better route.

Do you recommend a oem coil to use that is still available or an aftermarket substitute?

AFAIK, there are no straight 12V coils available from TMNA anymore. The oldest coil still available is a ballasted PN for 75-newer? Or 81-newer?
But there are plenty of straight 12V coils available from any parts store.

@S4Cruiser

Jon,

I have the original coil and igniter, off my ‘78.

My ‘78 has the 10ga pink Yazaki resistor spliced into the 10ga BY wire... when I went to DUI, I disabled the Yazaki and removed the perfectly functioning old coil and igniter.

I’ll never go back.

If you can use them and want them, they’re yours... pay shipping only... or, pick them up when you’re in Indian Springs.

Super thanks for the offer but I was able to order one of the 90919-02015 Toyota coils from Cruiserparts (I had them put hands on the item before ordering but it hasn’t arrived yet). Finding it and keeping the wiring simple / original was a plus!

Hopefully someone else can use your old coil!

@AussieFJ40 same offer, as below... but, paying the shipping to Oz is probably cost prohibitive.
