I'm finding these at $400 or so a pop. Is there a more reasonable source?

Jim

There is not much choice out there that can be significant less than that except going aftermarket which is not a good idea for that part.

I went to NAPA today to look at their rebuilt axles. I open one box and it's a rebuilt OEM. I buy two, get home, and the other isn't OEM. I'm going to go back tomorrow and have them get a few more and see what I get. I'll keep people posted.

Hey Jim,

That is interesting, how do you know it is rebuilt oem? Or is it oem part rebuilt with aftermarket parts or rebuilt with oem boot? Care to share some pics?

I'm interested as well, since I have two Napa axles in my truck from a few months ago. I was expecting them to make noise by now but a few wheeling trips and all is still well. *knock on wood*

I'm throwing them in this weekend I'll get pics then.

I have no idea what's under the boots, or the parts in the CV itself. I can tell you the axle and both housings are factory.

More to come.

Hey it's animal chin

Indeed sir.

I went back to NAPA and asked to see another axle and it was OEM. I now have two OEM's. I'm out $320 or so if I don't return the cores, about $130 if I do.

Here you go. As you can see exactly what came out. They went in without issue except for me forgetting a dust shield on one so it'll come back out in a bit.

Thanks for the pic. Is it even plausible that I got two OEM axles so cheap? I love the idea, but I really doubt it. I guess I'll know for sure if they either fail in 2018 or I reboot them in a couple hundred thousand miles.

What part number did you get? I got NMD 944038 for $81 each.

^^^ Above:
I bought two new CV's from Advance auto and so far they are good but I think the splines at the end are not as strong as the OEM. A remanufactured OEM axle will have a wornout splines at either end I suppose. Everysingle wornout part in the front drive train will contribute to the infamous driveline clunk. I might get OEM axles sometime soon from Camelback.

For $75 no core charge
How are the splines on the rebuilt units? Part of the wear on the axle is the spline, is it not? I thought rebuilt units would typically re-use the ends of the axle and just redo the boots and CV. In the case of the LC, that seems to be a partial fix.
No way to refurb the splined end. And from Toyota, the outers are no longer available- just complete axle. New flanges would help on worn axle splines, but service life expectancy would be shortened.

The rebuilt axles have neoprene boots which wont last near as long as oem. And I think what CVJ does in a rebuild is different from what Detroit does. CVJ only sells and accepts Toyota cores, not sure what Detroit does.

@$75 ea from Detroit I cant imagine you get much more than fresh grease and new boots. It also looks like the dust shields are missing in the pictures-

So, is NAPA part the way to go here (or Detroit Axle)?

CVJ should have these. I would expect them to cost more than autopart store, but less than the dealer. It seems like high quality is the only way to go on the 100 series, unless you like changing the CV's more often.
