I just bought an 8" JL audio sub and am planning to modify the sub box and trim to house it. I think it will protrude a bit but I have some left over upholstry from my seats that I'm going to use to re-trim the area.

that is what I'm thinking. I have a dual voice coil 8" JL sub thats been sitting in a box in the closet. I thought about making a plate to cover the factory holes and mount the 8" sub. I'm just using speakers I already have.

Looks like enough room and should be easy to trace the sub area and center mount the sub.

looks good, couple of questions

Which sub are you using?
Have you tried to figure out the amount air space you have in the box?
How hard was it to trim the panel?

It's a JL Audio 8W3v3-4.

Haven't tried to figure out the box volume, just hoping it works out. Basically don't want to have a sub box taking up space in the cruiser, so this is my only option. Tech at crutch field said to leave it ported.

Cutting the panel was easy. Just used a sharp utility knife.

^I would be interested to see if those work, for $4 each why not give it a shot?

I am not positive..... But, I think they might be too deep. For some reason the measurement of 2 1/2" is coming from my memory when I measured it last time.....

I still have mine pulled out. I'll measure the stock speaker when I get home.

Can you also check if they are wired in series or parallel, if they are in series they can be replaced with a single 4 ohm speaker and it should not have a negative effect on the amp.

I dont have solutions or experience, but i have ideas. when finances allow it, i plan to do a custom situation like the 8" boys have done. the only difference is that i refuse to trim my baby. i was thinking about seeing a custom box fitting 2x flush mounted JL 6.5" subs instead of the one 8". my math says itll have similar surface area and air movement. just a thought.

Bump for those who have replaced the two 4" subs.....

I need to do this prior to installing drawers.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Mine have been pulled out for over a year now. I bought some replacements, but they didn't work

I've thought about running the OE sub wires to a DVC 2ohm sub in a seperate box, but with me adding an aftermarket radio, it'd be cheaper and easier to add a small amplified box instead.

Just pulled my sub out a couple weeks ago since it wasn't being used (new amp).

Haven't decided if I will modify the existing box and place an 8 inch in there or go with a separate box behind the 2nd row seats (haven't used the 3rd row seats since purchase 7 yrs. ago).

A friend showed me his JL Audio Stealthbox in his 4Runner recently. Very clean install and fits right over the wheel well.

Wish they had one for the Cruiser!

Of course if someone decided to make a few, there might be a few audiophiles on here for a group buy - <hint, hint>.
