While the forest is open again under stage two restrictions. Which means no campfire. But unless it's cools off a bunch by early August I'll pass on camping. We are a little warmer than the rim and been in the upper sixties for the low. I would pass on the run itself if I didn't have air. Dusty roads at the base do not sound like any fun. Heat and dust.
Yep John it needs to cool off a little bit more. I have even considered the “fire ring” but it seems can’t get much run time without a 20 lb propane tank. So with a 20 pound tank to haul plus the fire ring it starts to feel like you are hauling everything but the kitchen sink which does not appeal to me one bit! If run time of two nights at a few hours per night was possible with a 5 pound tank the whole fake fire would be more appealing to me. Anyone else have a ring they run off a 5 pound tank and can verify run times? Going stir crazy down here in the heat!!!!!!!!!

No 5lb tanks, but I run off of 10lb tanks and can use a fire ring easily for a couple nights, 2-3 hours per night. Never tried longer trips than that, so no idea if a third or fourth night is possible. Unfortunately I have never filled one soon enough after a trip to remember how much I used it before refilling to get a baseline of how much was consumed.

I used our 5lb tank for a couple nights at Patagonia lake in January, plus cooking. We were good. Didn't run it on high though. Ran it for an hour or so each night. It was a fresh tank and was probably close to empty.

I should fill it and time how long we can run it.

@brices123 do we have a current status on the run? Also on the trail itself? I am expected to use what I thought was my wife's 5th gen 4Runner. I know the nurf bar with steps that bolts to the floor would need to come off but are sliders needed? My understanding is the 265X70X17 is the largest tire without a lift and no lift plans. Still have the original Bridgestone ATs.

Unless something changes and cools off and have a bunch of rain have to plans to camp on the rim in August. Even then not sure how busy the spots would be along the edge. Ideally would prefer an October run.

Yes I also vote for October

I would be up for the run but I will be at Solid Axle Summit in Colorado that week and possibly a run in Utah with @Pitch with a LandCruiser Museum visit thrown in.

I am still up for camping in October no matter what. Just a great time of year.

Sounds and looks fun but not totally understanding when this run is? August or October, Sounds like its still hot up there in August? Am interested but also looks like only 10 rigs can go? I would have prolly 2 rigs as my son would want to drive his cruiser and my wife and I in the other...

Sorry for the confusion.

For the last several years we have always made the Casner trip in October. We were able to secure the permit for one of the weekends in October. They changed the rules on how to get the permit and for the last two years, I have not been able to get the permit to run Casner in October (bummer). The permit I received this year is for the week of August 2bd. I am not really excited about doing the run in the heat of August. I have reached out to the Forest Service to see if they even have it open because I believe the Rafael fire did some damage to the top of the run. I have not heard back.

If anyone is interested in doing this run in August, please let me know. Otherwise I will turn the permit back over to the Forest Service and let them give it to someone else.

As for October, I still plan on camping up in that area (near the end of FR 231 on top of the Rim). I am looking at the first weekend (1 -3) or the third weekend (15-17). I will post more as October approaches.

@brices123 Brice could you explain how the forest service changed how permits are issued? Wondering if this is something multiple people could put in for to improve chances of getting an October slot?

Not very fond of an August run either. Weather has cooled off in the high country. Not sure about the area around Casner Mountain but further east had more rain than all last monsoon. 2" rain twice in the last week. Besides the current condition of the trail not a fan of mud. Haven't ventured into the forest lately. Not because I'm not worried about getting stuck but rather not a fan of cleaning mud off the under side.

They went from a "call in on this day to request the week you wanted" to a "you have to get a hold of the FS Ranger on a certain day and he gives you a week". The FS thought was that more (meaning not the same) people would be able to get permits to run Casner. I understand what they are trying to do, it is just a bummer to get a week in August and not the one I want in October.
Does this make sense?

I am also worried about all the mud. A couple of years ago Casner was pretty washed out from all the rain and it was not pretty. If in August we are still getting rain, it might be really ugly.

Curious if anyone wants to go?

The permit allows up to 10 trucks drive the trail (either up or down) once between between Monday August 2nd through Sunday August 8th.

Let me know.

I probably can't make the run, but maybe a night of camping that weekend would work. Anyone in the N AZ CSC group interested in running Casner sometime between 8/2-8/8?

Please count me in, and I'd be up for camping too. But if the monsoon continues as it has it could be prohibitively muddy.

I sent Brice a PM to get details.

Brice is going to send me the Casner gate access code and other details as soon as he receives them. Anyone who's interested in joining can reply here or PM me.

I worked the government and making sense is a joke.

So if I get what you are saying the ranger just gives you what date he wants? Even if a date hasn't been given you still can't request it? How do you know what day to call? If twenty club members called early that day wouldn't that improve the chances of getting a week in October?

It is with a very sad heart that I make this post.

There will NOT be a Casner run this year. The recent fires and rain have forced the Forest Service to close Casner and several other roads in the area.

The ranger told me he was not sure that Casner would open up at all this year.

I still would like to go camping in October, but will post about that in a different thread.

Bummer on Casner Brice but keep us posted of any camping outings 👍

We have become a propane state, how sad 😞
