I didn't see it mentioned anywhere above, but you couldn't get past the ranch on Cottonwood Canyon rd. last time I was there. Had to detour around on Ajax Mine rd. This was a few months ago.

It looks like the bypass has been blocked. We turned around at this point and went up Mineral Mountain to the 60. Mineral Mountain is a breeze btw.

I ran it from North to South in July.
The Mineral Mountain area had two places with steps, (moderate obstacles. Both have bypasses.
Coming from the South the steps should be easier cause they’re down hill, but still fun. Its a nice ride.
It takes a while as Matt has said. Looking forward to it.

Question being how the trail is rated a 4/10 a stock fj40 with 31s would work?

Everything I've seen suggests high-clearance and all-terrains are all thats needed. I'll be surprised if its any more challenging than like 4 Peaks rd.

You would be fine on the bypasses. Going North there is just one sandy step up that could possibly be a problem, but its not a ledge or exposed so you could be strapped up.
We were going down it and slid some at the bottom, so maybe traction might be anissue going up.
I IMHO, you'd be okay. I only have a center differential lock on 33.4’s .

We will give the GMRS with Privacy Codes a shot for this run. GMRS channel 16 with CTCSS privacy code 16. Handheld GMRS radios are easy as can be.

I’ll bring along some spare handheld Midland loners with (16 ct 6) programed in, incase anyone needs one.

I will also have two handhelds programmed for 16 ctcss 16. Note its 16 and 16, not 16 and 6.

I also got my MARS/CAP Mod'd Yaesu FTM400 configured to work with this setup as well through the RT-Systems software:

Use Tone Mode "T Sql"

I created 3 memory channels for GMRS 15, 16 and 17 each with the corresponding privacy codes 15, 16 and 17 respectively.

  • GMRS Channel 15 is frequency 462.550 with Privacy Code/CTCSS 15 = 110.9
  • GMRS Channel 16 is frequency 462.570 with Privacy Code/CTCSS 16 = 114.8
  • GMRS Channel 17 is frequency 462.600 with Privacy Code/CTCSS 17 = 118.8

Woops ! My typo

Thanks a million all!

Looks like a great time. I’ll have to make it out to one soon!

Great to meet everyone. Appreciate your patience with me being extra careful. I had a passenger, Dan who had just had a hip replacement. He loves to wheel so he was eager to come. I couldn’t take a chance on an “unexpected bump” to set him back.
I expect we are about the same age as your Dad’s. You”ll get there sooner then you think . . (if you’re lucky.)😀

Matt, good on you for being open to “privacy channels.” My local group have been using them for two years. They just remove one of the irritant from the ride. I can’t convince my over landing club “Off Road Passport” to try them.
They’er afraid that too many members will have difficulty programming them in.

You demonstrated how it can be done on short notice, in the field, “ with a little help from their friends.”

Hope to wheel with you folks again,
Mick
