I have a rule, if I borrow something more than 3 times, I should buy it.
Pester'd my neighbor multiple (too many) times to use his Mac TaskPlus.

I use dash command app on iPhone & Vermeek WiFi dongle you can get for like $20 on Amazon. Works great - ironically I used it to clear a CEL on the way to work this morning :/

had a different brand wifi dongle at first but it died after a year. Vermeek going on 4+ years now.

We've had our BlueDriver for +2 years now. Nice thing is they continue to update the software.

Also use BlueDriver. Have the App on my iPhone (trouble free), carry the Plug-In portion in my "go bag" so I have it with me when ever I (or a friend) needs it. Has come in handy a number of times while out on the road. Monitors everything I need to know, plus much more.

I really wish there was an OBD-1 reader that would be compatible with an iPhone. The only one I ever recall finding was android only.

UltraGauge and ScanGauge can be used to scan codes too.

Great for reading the codes, but I find having a decent dedicated reader than can run some diagnostics to be a solid step. I love my scangauge (I have had two ultraguages bite the dust with the heat after two summers). I'd get one that can do alternator tests and read abs codes, I got mine from autozone for $80 and it's worked surprisingly well.

I ended up with one of these.

I have the older version AUTEL for about 10yrs now, and its stil going strong. I like that the on-screen menus are very intuitive, it hooks up fast using the OBD port, and gives you a scrolling list of variables, including recording of live events for later review and real-time sensor readings. It's rubber armored and built tough, too.

I've used it many times to help diagnose problems and with friends vehicles, and it's indispensable if you're doing your own work and don't want to throw parts at symptoms. The only downside - it's too big for keeping it connected as a dashboard gauge indicator, like many do to monitor various things using BT connection to their phone.
