My 1970 FJ 55 has a Dodge NV4500 5-speed installed by the PO. I'm getting ready to do a complete fluid change and so I just checked on the Internet to get the right trans oil and amount. Now I'm confused. Everything I read says the ONLY oil to put in a NV4500 is either dealer stock or Castrol Syntorque. Any experience with this by anyone here?
While I'm at it, what oil should I put in the transfer case and transaxles?
Thanks for any help.

My dad has an NV4500 in his dodge power wagon, and I think he runs amsoil just like I do in the cruiser. I will have to check for you.

I read several discussions on other boards that included question and answer sessions with an oil manufacturer and a Chevrolet rep. Neither of those two sources could, in clear conscience, recommend a different oil. They both stated that other oils might work fine but there is no real research to support it.

There was lots of circumstantial evidence, like Morse_FJ40's reply for example. But I never found enough evidence to convince me that saving $30 because I was a tightass would not lead to some kind of damage to my very expensive transmission. So I toodled down to the Chevy dealer and bought the dealer oil.

Do the same. Consider it an investment. The oil will last many thousands of miles and it's one less little voice in your head. hth

Only oil recommended for the NV4500 by New Venture Gear is Castrol Syntorq.

Contact Standard Transmission for the best price on the Syntorque oil.

You can use any dino 90weight gear oil in the toyota 3/4 speed tcase and diffs.

I have used the dodge synthetic blend in mine for the last three years as it was recommended by the dealer (carbon fibre synchros) and I used syntorque in the t-case incase I ever blew the seal between the two I figured It would be the best if the two started to mix together. It's very expensive though. I think dodge has the cheaper price as compared to chev though.

Yeah, everything I've read says that if you run anything other than the recommended fluid, the synthetic syncros will tend to gum up and make downshifting difficult. We bought ours from the local Dodge dealer as they had better prices than Advance Adapters or the Chevy dealer.

I run the amsoil stuff that is specifically made for the nv4500. I use standard severe gear synthetics in everything else.

I didn't know there was such an oil. Please correct me if I'm wrong...... I don't believe any Amsoil oil is certified or recommended by New Venture gear for the NV4500 or the NV5600.

Not bashing Amsoil, but I have issues with Amsoil saying that it meets or exceeds certain API specification without actually having the API cerfication.

The only Amsoil I use is the Amsoil series 2000 75-140W gear oil in the diffs of my Cummins powered dodge.
