I see that we are all leading exciting lives on this friday night

If you only knew ;)

I'm happily making money with my keester parked on the couch, and occasionally looking over at 'mud. Money that somehow ends up in or on my rig!!!

You can always put some of that keister cash into my rig:flipoff2:

hmm...we all need to get in on this internet thing. I hear its gonna be huge and I forsee lots of money...so much interwebz moneys....

Need to redo my breathers for sure. Front diff gear oil was OK after Richloam, but rear turned into chocolate milk. I suppose that shouldn't be surprising seeing how far under water the rear end was :)

New fj40 owner needs help diagnosing prob

Have my new fj40 and it makes loud wine-ing noise when I go over 50mph. from transmission/transfer case/drive shaft area (sounds like im trying to go 50mph in 1st gear with out high engine rpm). i dont know how to diagnose prob or fix. Who in cen Fl can check it out and help me get this rig working properly. I have mimimal mechanical skills but eager to learn to maintain my rig. im in orlando area and willing to drive anywhere that does not have me on I-4 for more than a few miles. thanks

If it's a transmission, it usually is quieter in fourth gear than the first three.

It sounds like it's more likely to be a transfer case.

All the oil levels OK? Could be the rear diff too. What is the history of the vehicle?

toyodieselfan using brothers computer so...i bought a toyota 1hz diesel/h55 trans and whatever t-case was bolted to it off mud and sent it to profits as well as an rust free fj40 bought out in CO. sight unseen and sent to profits. they installed everything get it home and the install looks top notch but speeds are way off from what I'm hearing from folk on the ih8mud site with similar set up. not only am i going top speed of 55 in 5th gear engine at high rpm buty lots of noise from t-case/transmission area. engine runs, sounds and pulls strong. this is my 1st fj40 and I'm not a mechanic so if you guys know of someone who is keen on checking/diagnosing this stuff id appreciate it. thanks dominick

The H55 transmission doesn't really have enough of an overdrive for a diesel that will be driven at interstate speeds.

What vehicle do you have? What rear end ratio?
If you have 4:10's, you could always put in 3:70's from an FJ60. That would make it a 65 MPH vehicle. Add 35" tires and you have a 70 MPH vehicle.

There is a plug on the side of the transmission to check the gear oil. It will require a 24MM wrnch or maybe a crescent wrench. It's easy to check.

The 1HZ engine has this natural whine over 2300 RPM. kind of like a turbine jet engine.
I've driven a few 1HZ powered Cruisers.
I might be in Orlando next weekend. I'd be happy to take a ride and listen.

Steve

FL cruiser that would be greatly appreciated, thanks dominick 407-637-2108 also it has the stock 1978 fj40 gearing 4.11 i think its called. i turned the drive shaft one rotation and rear wheels turned 1/4 rotation

I also have a H55 split case 4.11 FJ40 that you are welcome to ride in as well (Melbourne), but it has a SBC instead of oil burner. The overdrive is only 15% so it is not much, like FLCRUISER said. The easiest OD is bigger tires :)

So I need a different t-case? Or put 3.70 gears will give me 5 or 6 mph more right.?? So instead of the engine revving high at 50 it'll do it at 55mph. That's still way off the mark. I'll crawl under it in the am see what t-case i have and do some investigating as to proper function ( i can only find 2 positions) and speeds I Should be getting. Also crusher reports with this same set up he's cursing at 70 mph.. Are there multiple versions of the h55 transmission

Dominick - I think you're best off letting one of these guys just go over the rig with you. They'll fill your head with more information than you can stand if you'd like.

Luis has more parts in his back yard than make up your whole truck, too... !!!

If I'm in town I'd love to meet up wherever just to learn myself.

Your transfer case should be fine. In 2WD high, all transfer cases have the same output ratio of 1 to 1. All H55's have the same ratios. There isn't any variations of the H55 that I know of. It could be something as simple as noise from the fan making it sound like your reving more than you really are.
As you've found out the diesels really don't like RPM's. Cruising at over 2200 RPM's seems un natural for them.

You won't have any problem trading your 4:11's for 3:70's. More people are wanting to gear down than gear up, so the 4:11's are in a little more in demand.

My plans are to be in the UCF area on Saturday. I'll give you a call next Friday.

It's interesting when you don't know what to look for you don't see anything. Then when asked to check xyz there it is as obvious as can be... After putting about 75 miles on my rig I'm seeing oil leak around head gasket, oil dripping from t-case. Appears everything was pressure washed so no obvious signs... Although this does not account for the low gearing? Or does it? Thanks for help so far.

Oil leaking won't help you in the overdrive arena, but leaking oil that gets low can make noise.

The only difference in the H55's as far as I know is the input shaft (1 for gas and 1 for diesel).

You can use the RPM calculator to get a rough idea of what RPM your really running at in which gear. Does the truck have a tach? THe first time I drove my 73 through Denver it was on 31" tires and I was trying to keep out of the way in traffic, poor thing sounded like it wanted to jump out of the hood. After a half hour it wasn't as bad.

What size tires are you running? With 36's and 4.11 I am running a little over 2K at hi-way speeds.
