No tach. It's crazy but the more miles I put on this truck the quieter it is. Been driving it for a week now. Put about 100 miles on it. Tomorrow if I don't get to connect with someone I'll take it to a oil / lube place and have them put some oil in the t-case so I don't do damage utill I can get this handled.

Be careful at the lube stores, some just assume they all take ATF instead of 90W. It is very easy to check the level of the oil. I will see if I can't find a pic.

What size tires are you running?

Couldn't find the post I was looking for, here is a pic of the plug you can remove and check the oil level. If you remove it you should be able to look in with a flashlight or stick your finger in and you should have the oil level even with the bottom of the hole.

Does this diagram help at all?

Since his drive train has been swapped out, the above diagram might not help.

Since it's an H55, I'm guessing it has a "splitcase" style transfer case.

Picture was too large, let me try again... Your setup may not have the drum brake on it but the fill plug should be the same. Just take it out and see if there is oil at the bottom of the hole.

fill check plug.webp

does a split case have a lever or knob that allows for an over drive?

Unfortunately no. There was a Fairey overdrive that was available on the one piece case (I think) but the drive ratios available for the split case are 1:1 for high and 2:1 for low range. The Fairey has been out of production for years and wasn't too great. (No personal experience, just based on what people have said) There are aftermarket gear sets available but they actually have underdrive for low range and either 3:1 or 4:1 for low range.

Bigger tires=overdrive

Update on my build thread. I have a vid of the LT1 coming to life on the first try. Runs like a champ.

If anyone needs a stock fj40 radiator, or 79 fj40 and up fuel tank let me know.

I sent Luis a pm days ago (friday) and have not yet heard from him. He has enough parts to build an entire rig, he can build a new t- case from scratch. I'm starting to think he's a figment of your imagination or an alter ego that does not really exist like in that movie fight club.

Uhhhhhhhh my wife just now told me some guy called today about a thread about my truck and his name was Laurence or larry or luis something. so super man does exist!!

I have updated my build thread again. I have put up some lost photos.

Marks Adapters of Australia makes a gear set for the transfer case to give you an 8% OD.
Advance Adapters is selling them.

There is a catch.......The price:eek:

You'd still probably need to swap in 3:70 gears in addition though.

Boy I tell ya that brings back good and bad memories . You have to really enjoy bring something back to life .
