In the spirit of organizing something. We are going to camp at the Water Canyon campground on Friday and/or Saturday night. The current plan is to run North Baldy on Saturday and maybe go up to the observatory on South Baldy on Sunday.
The road up South Baldy is maintained and quite pleasant, the road up and over North Baldy to Kelly mine is a bit more challenging but quite passable by any capable 4x4. I would compare it with some of the tougher trails around Silverton/Ouray, not like Poughkeepsie, more like one of the passes. The first 1.5-2 miles is in a wash and subject to constant changes so there is no guarantee that it is passable but it has been the last 3 years. NM pinstripping is a given.

Come on out. We will be making the run again in 3 or 4 weeks but I don't know if I will be able to camp then.

Sounds like fun, can't camp Friday but I could come meet you Saturday morning. What time you think of heading out of camp?

The current plan has us leaving Albuquerque around 7ish on Saturday morning and meeting at the campground, then hitting the trail around 10:00, lunch at the top about 1 or so depending on the number of rigs and time it takes to make the climb then back at the campground by 5:00 if nothing goes wrong. If someone wanted to do a day trip I would think they could be out and back in about 10 hours maybe less, leave Albuquerque by 8am and be back by 6pm providing that everything went smoothly. The campground is pretty nice and it is about 6900" so the weather is nice and cool.

This sounds like a fun trip. I am heading up to Colorado around Lake City and Crestted Butte. Going to do some fishing.

If this is open to new (to the club) folks, I might be in.
I have plans for alpine loop which may fall through, so this could be a sweet consolation prize.

Lurch, is the only "club member" that has expressed interest so far. Your more than welcome to come.

North Baldy is a great trail and typical of old mining roads in the mountains of New Mexico. Be sure to spend some time at the crash site and give your respects to the young men that were killed on a training mission during WW2. There is a lot of history in that area; especially the ghost town of Kelly.

That was the first off-road adventure with HDC for me back in 2001.

I'm in, at least for Saturday. If weather and demands at home allow, I'll camp.
See you at the campground by 10, or on the road before

Can you update your signature line with your vehicle info so folks will know what to look for?

Tomorrow he will be in a gray '94 extra cab.
Will you be able to escape from TN long enough to go?

If anybody else is interested in a day trip or camping, we are leaving Albuquerque about 7:30 in the morning

Are you meeting others in ABQ? If so I'll meet you there!

Steve, call or text in the morning and we will meet up, 227-1535. That goes for anybody else that wants to go for that matter.

That looks like a great place to visit!

Very cool - it looks like it was a great day to be out wheeling, and a great location.

Steve - You had one picture of your phone - it looks like an iPhone? I'm guessing that's a GPS/tracking app - if so, which app? I've used my iPhone (just the Maps function) for getting around on pavement when I'm out of town, but it would be nice to have something for off-road.

Justin - Thanks for keeping us posted when you're heading out - I hope to be able to join you guys soon. Too much other stuff going on, and wheeling needs to move up the priority list!
