Hi, I am a Noobie. I recently purchased a 1971 FJ 40. I am the third owner of this vehicle. It’s in excellent condition rust free. The previous owner purchased a 1977 donor vehicle which he took the front axle from and put on the 71 for the disc brakes. He also took the four-speed transmission and installed it in the 71. Along with the vehicle I received quite a few parts from the donor vehicle, including the 2F engine with about 70,000 miles. I would be interested in hearing Y’alls thoughts about swapping out the original engine in the 71 for the 2F out of the 77.
Thank you
Snowshoe FJ 40

I have a 1966 fj 40 with original motor. It runs like a top. Until that changes I’ll keep what I have. If that changes I’d certainly consider the f2.

Looks like its in pretty good shape. I am doing my rear bumperettes and seat frames soon. From what I found is to powdercoat them prismatic- vegas gold for your front bumper.

I dont think its a huge benefit upgrading to the 2F if your original motor is running well.

It's cool that you got that engine, but I wouldn't put it in the 71. Those engines with low miles aren't plentiful, so you might fetch quite a few dollars for it.

The 2F in my '76 FJ40 has only 66,000 origianal miles and it runs like a top. It'll be going into my '71 FJ40 build. The '71 has a 2F with unknown mileage and history.

Welcome to the madness!

Wow, clean rig!

The torque is about the same and the horsepower is negligible, about 10 more for the 2f (Wikipedia)

I see CA plates, will this be registered there? That may influence the decision in sticking with the 71; no limitations (I think), or less headache hopefully.

My only gripe about the 2f is warming it up/starting but once you get the drill down it’s fine. I’d drive it for a year and see what you think.

The drive-train has already been altered so keeping stock won’t factor into it.

Of course, if ain’t broke...:)

I am about to do the same 1977 axle swap on my 1972. Could you maybe send me/post some pics of the brake line along the axle? The two different years have different brae lines, would be curious how the PO did the work around. Thanks!
