Hey guys Im Dustin. Im looking at getting into a 40 or 60. A 60 because I have a wife and two kids and I would like a truck that is able to get to the mountains from here (5 hours) and haul them and stuff back and forth. I also want something carburated and not much of a computer.

What are the best years to look for. Pre 80 Im assuming, and are there different motors and setups or are they all pretty well the same.

Thanks for the education

Dustin

Welcome!
I think you meant post 1980 as FJ-60(2)s span 1981-1990. 1989-1990 gives you fuel injection and an auto. The motors and drivetrain really are all fairly bulletproof. Treat the search like any used car search. Look for no rust, lots of maintenance records, etc.

Thanks man. I wasnt sure on the years but mainly i wanted to know carbed vs fi. Theres a few in my area that I will be checking out this weekend.

thanks again, going through the faq now.

If this is going to be a family hauler, maybe look at the 80 series? They could have more safety features like air bags and should belt seat belts; a bit more comfort like leather interior; and be more reliable as they are not as old and will require less age-related maintenance. Just my $.02

This is good advice if you are not rich and if you are on your first marriage. The 60 you will love but in time you WILL spend some money on her and in time you will LOVE her more than your wife. Just sayin. The 80 you may get more miles on before you have to cough up coins and piss off the princess.

Ha ha thanks guys. I guess I should explain further. Im one of those crazy right wing preppers that believes and some point poop will hit the fan in this country. Im an avid car and off road guy also. My wifes '06 range rover is the family hauler for comfort. Im looking at a 60 for size, of road ability after some modification and additions, and will head to the mountains every now and again for fishing and hunting with buddies. If need be get the family out of town should computer controlled vehicles not run any more. Yes that is a very remote possibility but one im going to prep for. So why not get a cool truck that will get where I want it to go aslo. I love the 40's but it would be a very cramped 5 hour drive to NM.

thanks guys

Dustin,

a 60 series is what you are asking for in that case.

the most complicated electronics is the radio.

focus on frame and body rust. running gear is the "cheap" part of these rigs and if your into the TEOTWAWKI stuff you'll probably be searching for a diesel conversion anyway.

Where are you located?it would help locating good quality projects.like what the others have stated look for rust along the body and frame.good luck on your searched.

Depends on where you live and whether you have to comply with the SMOG Nazis.

what about SMOG control on the 60's is electronic? I thought it was all egr/vacuum stuff. I don't live in a SMOG nazi state so I'm ignorant to it.

ignition is also electronic.

If you want electronic free, get a FJ55. But then you probably won't have AC either.

Im in amarillo Tx so no smog nazi's here.

SO just to be clear you are in Texas and you are worried about the electronic cars taking over the world and you need to get your family and your guns to New Mexico? Why are you not buying a scout? Or a Heep or some other american made POS to keep you safe during the rapture? Oh wait a suburban that would be a good rapture truck.

Theres one is every crowd. I can tell by your reagan quote in your sig that we probably dont see eye to eye. Its not about the rapture or it beeing american made. I highly doubt it will happen. In the meantime, I want something different then the everpresent jeep or the like. I had a scout, it was cool too. Just want something that I can wheell ocasionally and rig up to go extended camping if I want to.

Make fun all you want btw. Ill have hot water and electricity when your beloved Progressives destroy the country. Or at best just make it too expensive to live in.

Oh and heres what Reagan was actually saying.

Reagan was quoting John Adams' well-known quotation, facts are stubborn things. He certainly knew the correct words--it was a simple misstatement--but it makes a funny quote in its own right. [note by Michael Moncur, November 30, 2004]

Dustin, no offense intended and I apologize for any taken. I thought that we having a dialog here.

Oh fun, a survivalist thread. :D Not sure Brian is correct above. I think the jury is still out on the effects for motor vehicles. But, by all means, play it safe and take Mace's advice. Buy a 55. They fear nothing, except rust.
