Oh fun, a survivalist thread. :D Not sure Brian is correct above. I think the jury is still out on the effects for motor vehicles. But, by all means, play it safe and take Mace's advice. Buy a 55. They fear nothing, except rust.

electronic ign, would be disabled.
no jury, it's well proven.

what about SMOG control on the 60's is electronic? I thought it was all egr/vacuum stuff. I don't live in a SMOG nazi state so I'm ignorant to it.

It is primarily EGR and vacuum related stuff, but there are 3 or 4 electronic VSVs and the emissions "computer" that can be difficult to deal with.

My main point was that if you have to comply with emissions laws, a 60 is not necessarily a simple machine.

Hi, another noob here, but I just registered to comment in this thread. The effect of an EMP on electronically controlled vehicles is still inconclusive. The size of the warhead, distance from vehicle, and complexity of its (the vehicles) electrical systems are all factors in determining the end result. Furthermore, the wiring in any vehicle is not long enough to act as an "antenna" like power lines spanning the continent would.

Personally, I would not worry about it due to the relative simplicity of the electrical ignition on the 80's Land Cruises. At most, I would keep spare parts around.

On a side note, I really like the forum you guys have here. Ive recently caught the cruiser bug, and I think a 60 will fit my needs perfectly. Keep up the great work guys... I'll try to contribute when I can.

Okay, I gotta ask, what is an EMP? : ) Even though I have a 60 that I really like, I would say EFI might be > threat of EMP.

Dustin, no offense intended and I apologize for any taken. I thought that we having a dialog here.

None taken, I just know sarcasm when I see it. We can have all the dialogue you want. I do get a little testy though. I didnt mean for this to turn into a survival/emp threat thread either.

As as far as if one did hit, I agree that it depends on where its at, the size and would it actually hurt anything or not. My thoughts are an older vehicles electronics could be fixed. Id have no idea where to start on my wifes Range Rover or my Duramax.

I would think an extra distibutor or internals would get one running again in the event.

I did find a killer 40 in Dallas area that I want to go look at. Theres a lot less 60's around then i though there would be. The great thing is that mostly older people had them so they are not destroyed like blazers and jeeps are around here.

thanks
D

There is a thread out there about a 60 that profits put a cummings 3.3bt in. If you are a duramax guy and want simple I would look for it. The motors are new like 5k and run off of one wire. There are more suitable for a 40 IMHO but the serviceman that drives the 60 loves it. Do a search and it may be the best of both worlds.
