Helllo Gentz (and ladies),

I finally found the LC I've been waiting for. 1984 FJ60. Body is super clean, only rust is on the driver side doors in the bottom outside corner of both. Plan on doing a little cut&buff to polish her up a bit. Came with 2" OME lift but probably 10 years old already. More was rebuilt 10k miles ago and clutch was replaced when doing so! Pretty solid all around. The frame is solid, nothing more than a little surface rust but she is ready to get fixed up!

I have an 07 FJ Cruiser that is my baby. I have always had the work on it for my. I'm hoping to more of the work myself on the 60. Here is a list of things I'd like to do and I was hoping to get any suggestions/tips/advice you all would be willing to share.

The car is in Austin for the next 4-6 weeks. I live in San Diego but my buddy who knows a lot more about this stuff than I do is there. I bought in TX so I figured it is probably a bit more affordable to get s*** down in TX than commie Cali.

I'm looking for some good shops in Austin that could help with:

1 - body (minor dent removal, fix the rust in the bottom corner of the doors, do a nice polish on the existing paint
2 - someone to look at all the rubber underneath, the motor mounts, etc and give me a solid idea of what needs to be done to make it all fresh and new
3 - shop to look at replacing the leaf springs and shocks - I really like the idea of what @SNLC (
FJ62, 2-3" lift. What is better, OME or Ironman? Any thoughts? - https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/fj62-2-3-lift-what-is-better-ome-or-ironman-any-thoughts.1241229/post-13717866) had to say in this post about Bilstein and removing some of the leaf packs to make a nice smooth ride. I plan on using as a daily driver but I also plan on getting up to the mountains with the family. Not looking make an insane off roader. Something smooth and nice on the freeway but be able to handle most stuff when camping and heading to the slopes in the snow.
4 - Thinking to add fuel injection and would welcome any suggestions.
5 - has a minor exhaust leak but have gasket that came from previous owner to replace.

6 - Eventually, I'd love to look at doing a motor swap to a diesel - perhaps a crate Cummins 2r.8 or go the opposite direction and put in a solid V8 and transmission. Not sure what direction is better to go here. I'd to to have more horse power and kind of make it a sleeper - but I'd also love to get the dependability and mileage of a diesel. Maybe even the Mitsubishi with a turbo?

7 - Was thinking to put in black or grey carpet and get the seats redone. The interior is in pretty good shape so that is not huge priority right now.
8 - What about putting a FJ62 dash in to replace the cracked one in there now? I love the gauge layout.

She will be in Austin for a month or so.

I want to put on a bumper/winch as well as a rear bumper with full-size spare that swings out on the back. I also want to add a solid, low-profile roof rack!

Thanks in advanced for all your suggestions!

Nice looking rig!
I have heard good things about Land Cruiser Specialist but never used them - 512.996.9111. They can probably help. Reach out to the Austin chapter, if you haven’t already, the folks there can suggest body shops.

If you haven’t already get the FSM, factory service manual, look around in the “ resources” tab on the top of this page. It’s super helpful, I was able to rebuild my carburetor with it. And I’m no mechanic but I’m learning

Maybe you should drive it for a while and familiarize yourself with what it is now, before you start changing things. That way you have a baseline to judge from whether any changes were improvements or not. For starters, it appears to already have a lift “kit” installed.

It definitely has a lift. Just needs a refresh.

Freeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeborn!!!!!

I purchased my truck from a Lawyer down in Austin. He had a ton of work done on the rig by Cruiser Specialist down there before selling it to me. I never worked with them directly as I moved the rig to North Texas after purchasing it, but have receipts for the work. They had done an RMS and transmission input shaft seal, new clutch, all new AC system converted to R134a, rebuilt the carb, fixed the fuel sender among other things. Guy spent a significant amount of money getting the rig right but not sure it was any more expensive than any other shop. Lots of folks use that shop so its prolly THE bet for you down there if wanting others to work on your truck. Get ready to spend some cash though. Time might be your enemy however, as most Cruiser shops are booked weeks out these days. Again no direct experience with these guys but the work they did on mine seemed solid enough using the proper parts.

Thanks for the message. Any chance you can PM me a copy of the receipts or give me a $$$ amount the previous owner spent? This one I got is is really great shape. No hurry to do a ton of stuff now, but as always, I eyes are bigger than my stomach! My main concern is suspension and making sure the ride is good - then motor. The rest is up for debate...

It's a good idea to get a baseline idea of what needs to be addressed right now if anything vs over time. Some LC specialist shops may do that for you, or maybe you can bribe someone local from Mud to take a look. There are a lot of things you can do yourself given the time and inclination but you may want critical things done by a shop up front so you can enjoy the truck without risking major failure.

Welcome :flipoff2:

Like said above. Baseline everything. If any you will have a piece of mine. Just drive it out. It will tell you when it needs something. Good lucking rig. Good luck with it.

Agree 100%. My main thought right now is the cost to get s*** done in TX vs. Commie Cali. My buddy who has it right now in Austin is that guy. He knows these things really well and had a great amount of car knowledge period. Per his week with it, it is a solid little find. Motor and clutch are great. Little squirrely in the front end over 50 mph. So I think suspension is probably the top priority for now. I'm enjoying going down the rabbit hole of ever anything and everything to possibly do to the 60s.

Body is super clean, only rust is on the passenger sides in the lower corner of the doors - probably from bad seals and rain running down the door. I found a full kit to replace all the original rubber seals around doors and back. I'm going to get that going too. Need to find a good person in Austin that could possibly fix the rust in the doors! I'd love to keep the original paint and just buff it out, so I don't really want to have to swap doors out...

I can't comment authoritatively, but I would be pretty surprised if rust repair and paint are cheaper in Austin than in TJ. Unless it's just a couple of patch panels that a friend can do in their garage.

More importantly...do I trust 1- taking my LC to TJ? 2 - I've seen many a TJ paint job and they are not the best work I've seen. Now, if you want to get some dental work on your grill, I hear that's pretty legit though!

Austin will probably be expensive. I used this shop about 100 miles from Austin. They were fantastic and much less expensive than quotes I got in larger TX metro areas. Did a full glass out repaint with some dent repair. I can recommend them highly if you can get it there.
