I finally found the LC I've been waiting for. 1984 FJ60. Body is super clean, only rust is on the driver side doors in the bottom outside corner of both. Plan on doing a little cut&buff to polish her up a bit. Came with 2" OME lift but probably 10 years old already. More was rebuilt 10k miles ago and clutch was replaced when doing so! Pretty solid all around. The frame is solid, nothing more than a little surface rust but she is ready to get fixed up!
I have an 07 FJ Cruiser that is my baby. I have always had the work on it for my. I'm hoping to more of the work myself on the 60. Here is a list of things I'd like to do and I was hoping to get any suggestions/tips/advice you all would be willing to share.
The car is in Austin for the next 4-6 weeks. I live in San Diego but my buddy who knows a lot more about this stuff than I do is there. I bought in TX so I figured it is probably a bit more affordable to get s*** down in TX than commie Cali.
I'm looking for some good shops in Austin that could help with:
1 - body (minor dent removal, fix the rust in the bottom corner of the doors, do a nice polish on the existing paint
2 - someone to look at all the rubber underneath, the motor mounts, etc and give me a solid idea of what needs to be done to make it all fresh and new
3 - shop to look at replacing the leaf springs and shocks - I really like the idea of what @SNLC (
FJ62, 2-3" lift. What is better, OME or Ironman? Any thoughts? - https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/fj62-2-3-lift-what-is-better-ome-or-ironman-any-thoughts.1241229/post-13717866) had to say in this post about Bilstein and removing some of the leaf packs to make a nice smooth ride. I plan on using as a daily driver but I also plan on getting up to the mountains with the family. Not looking make an insane off roader. Something smooth and nice on the freeway but be able to handle most stuff when camping and heading to the slopes in the snow.
4 - Thinking to add fuel injection and would welcome any suggestions.
5 - has a minor exhaust leak but have gasket that came from previous owner to replace.
6 - Eventually, I'd love to look at doing a motor swap to a diesel - perhaps a crate Cummins 2r.8 or go the opposite direction and put in a solid V8 and transmission. Not sure what direction is better to go here. I'd to to have more horse power and kind of make it a sleeper - but I'd also love to get the dependability and mileage of a diesel. Maybe even the Mitsubishi with a turbo?
7 - Was thinking to put in black or grey carpet and get the seats redone. The interior is in pretty good shape so that is not huge priority right now.
8 - What about putting a FJ62 dash in to replace the cracked one in there now? I love the gauge layout.
She will be in Austin for a month or so.
I want to put on a bumper/winch as well as a rear bumper with full-size spare that swings out on the back. I also want to add a solid, low-profile roof rack!
